Read More	SWAILS, LONNIE ORESTES—Lonnie Orestes Swails, son of John and Ella Swails, was born August 3, 1882, in DeKalb county, Missouri. He departed this life early Sunday morning, May 18, 1958, in Lincoln General hospital, Lincoln, Neb., at the age of 75 years, 9 months and 15 days. He was united in marriage to Edna Elizabeth Leighton, April 10, 1910, in her home, 14 miles southeast of Woodward, Okla. To this union two children were born, Forrest and Marguerite of Geneva. Mr. Swails has been one of Geneva’s long time citizens and business men. He attended the York Business College for one year and then pursued the business world. Returning to Geneva, he worked for C. A. Smith and later in the Hitch Brothers grocery store. Mr. Swails relates that these were two of the finest men and they treated him as a son. In 1909 he went to Woodward, Okla., to be manager of the shoe department in a large department store. Upon his return to Geneva in 1910 he bought a half interest in the Hitch Brothers store and later he became full owner and became one of Geneva’s leading business men. After 50 years in the grocery business, Mr. Swails retired from the mercantile work, but he did not retire from active life. He was treasurer of the city of Geneva and of the Geneva school district until last month. He was a member of the Geneva Congregational church and had resigned as a deacon on account of failing health. He had been a member of the Masonic order many years. He was also a past president of the Chamber of Commerce. He leaves to mourn his passing one son, Forrest, of Geneva and a daughter, Mrs. Marguerite Freeman, of Geneva, three grandsons and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife, who passed away in June, 1953, three brothers, albert, who died at the age of 13, Creston at the age of 52 and Golie, 52, also four sisters, Jesse at the age of two, Pearl at the age of 51, Grace in infancy and Venda at the age of five. Mr. Swails was the last of a large family. Mr. Swails will be missed from the business of the town as he was always ready to extend a helping hand when called upon. His jovial spirit and friendliness which endeared him to all will be missed by the community and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Geneva Congregational church at 2 p. m. Tuesday, May 20. Rev. L. E. Werner officiated. A male quartet, Guy Brown Jr., Sheldon Johnson, Wallace Swanson and Richard Wagner sang “In the Garden” and “Old Rugged Cross.” Mrs. Willard Foster was accompanist. Pallbearers were Thomas Ewalt, C. J. Kimbrough, Neal Tucker, Robert Waring, Earl Wilkins and Ralph Reemts. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. The Nebraska Signal 22 May 1958 page 9.
