In July 1968 she was in an automobile accident and received severe bruises from which she recovered but other pains began. A large carcinoma tumor was discovered. She had an operation and cobalt treatment but the cancer had spread, and the end was nearing. She was working on her Christmas letter to send out early before she died when an old friend came to visit. Lora told her of her plans to donate her body to the KU Medical Center for research. Her friend encouraged her to hurry finishing the donation application which she did then and there as they sat on the bed. Lora pulled out two stamps from her purse to put onto the envelope for her friend to mail. The next day she was gone. The below biography was read at her memorial service that gives details on her life and family. Lora was born Lora Shatto, daughter of Rev. Ambrose Shatto and Ella Shatto at Denbigh, North Dakota, on February 25, 1904. After six years her father died and Ella Shatto moved 18 miles north of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, with her children. She homesteaded 160 acres of land and after four years when she had proved up her homestead she returned to the states with two of her children, one of them Lora, and settled at Wichita, Kansas. There she worked as a nurse, cooking for harvest hands and at many, many things. She moved to McPherson working as a cook and Lora enrolled at McPherson College. She graduated in 1927 and taught school in Florida and then Washington State. After six years of teaching she worked at Bethany Hospital and then in 1938 Lora started working for the Church of the Brethren Publishing House in Elgin, Ill. Here her interest in Foreign Missions took root but the love bug hit her and she married Ival Mainard and raised to maturity his two fine boys from a previous marriage. The marriage broke up and Lora returned to the Brethren Organization. The Church of the Brethren sent her as a missionary after months of training to Nigeria in 1957. Her focal point was Garkida. Dismayed to find less than one per cent of the people in that part of Africa Christians she began work there and planned for the messages she would deliver in the states when she returned. When the time came for the return about one and a half percent around the mission were Christians. Through missionary circles she learned that an old friend of hers had become a Missionary Plumber at Wichita. Ralph Egge would make trips on his own expense to any church of his faith and sometimes not of his faith to solve their plumbing difficulties. Ralph had written to Lora and soon after her return from Africa they were married. As a team they went out to many places, he to fix their plumbing at no cost, she to show slides and to talk up the missions in Nigeria at great cost. Part of Lora's last requests concerned the future of the Nigerian Missions. A Lora Egge Memorial Nigerian Mission Fund has been started and Rev. Ramon , pastor of the First Church of the Brethren at 10th and Jefferson, Wichita, Kansas is its chairman. Contributions can be made to that church or to The General Brotherhood Board., 1451 Dundee, Elgin, Illinois, 60l20. A memorial service on Wednesday evening, October 16th, 1968 at the Wichita Church held by Rev. Eller marked the last rites for this wonderful Christian.
