NELSON DIED LAST NIGHT Capt. L. Edward Nelson, well known waterman and one of the community's most highly respected citizens, died at his home in Lawsonia Friday of last week at the age of 71 years. He was the husband of Mrs. Hettie E. Nelsen and the son of the late John Henry and Elizabeth Lawson Nelsen, both members of prominent Somerset county families. Capt. Nelson had been a waterman practically all his life, sailing the Chesapeake Bay and outside waters, mostly in the freighting trade, and was active up to within a short time before his death. He was a quiet man, energetic and industrious, of the highest integrity, and a man whom people held in deep respect and affection. As he made friends going through life, by his helpfulness and by giving friendship, the ties between them strengthened as the year passed. For a long time he had wielded very considerable political influence, as a member and leader in the Democratic party, and was an able worker in the Democratic cause. He had held several positions of importance with credit to himself and to the party. It was always a pleasure for Capt. Nelson to help others whenever the occasion arose, and he had performed many deeds of kindness for which he will long be remembered. Funeral services were conducted at his home Sunday at 2.30 p.m. by Rev. E. E. Garland, pastor of the Baptist Temple, assisted by Rev. Robert Green, pastor of Asbury Methodist church and by the Holden Sisters, pastors of the Pilgrim Holiness church. Interment was in the Asbury cemetery. Bearers were Preston Evans, William Johnson, Harvey Howard, William Howard, John L. Landon and Nelson Landon. The attendance at the funeral and the many lovely floral pieces sent to honor his memory testified to the esteem and regard in which he was held by relatives and friends alike. He is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs. Edna Buse of Washington, D.C., Mrs. Hilda Landon and one son, L. Edward Nelson, Jr. of Crisfield. Four brothers, Ray Nelson, Chris Nelson, Herman Nelson and Clarence Nelson; one sister, Miss Beatrice Nelson and nine grandchildren, also survive.
