BACKMAN, 60, RETIRED FARMER, DIES Wynot Man Passes Way After 1 Day Illness; Funeral Friday WYNOT -- Death came suddenly to Louis J. Backman, 60, lifelong Cedar county resident, who died at 11:30 p.m. Monday in Sacred Heart hospital in Yankton where he had been taken earlier the same day. Cause of the death was attributed to combined kidney and heart trouble. His health during the past year had been poor. Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Friday) at 9:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic church at Wynot with interment in Sts. Phillip and James cemetery. Rev. Charles Knippen, pastor of Sts. Phillip and James church, will officiate. The Jones funeral home is in charge. Mr. Backman was born January 9, 1881, at Menominee, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Backman. He moved with his parents from Menominee to a farm near St. James in 1898. Two years later he moved onto another farm where he resided continuously for 36 years, retiring in 1936. He married Miss Mary Ellen Sargent of Newcastle on February 18, 1908, at Sts. Phillip and James church where he was an active member for many years. Mrs. Backman died in 1936. Following his retirement, Mr. Backman resided in Hartington during 1937, then returned to Wynot. He was a member of Sacred Heart church and a past member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. Survivors include three sons, Florian, Gerald and Henry, all of Wynot; five daughters, Mrs. Werner Burbach, Hartington; Wilma, Luceda and Geraldine, all of Wynot, and Mrs. Joe Mathews of Los Angeles, Calif. He also leaves two brothers and seven sisters: Ed, Wynot; Barney, Laurel; Mrs. H. B. Klug, Wynot; Mrs. A. T. Duman, Sioux City; Mrs. Pauline Wagers, Sioux City; Mrs. Melvin Rosenbach, Fremont; Mrs. Andy Faulk, Hartington; Mrs. B. C. Pinkelman, Obert, and Miss Josephine Backman, Hartington. Pallbearers will be nephews Dallas, Claude, Bernard, Sylvin, Cletus and Reinold Backman.
