The last one to be called was Louis Stroh, whose death occurred at 1 o'clock Sunday morning, July 18, 1920, from an attach of heart trouble, which came over him about two hours before. When word of his sudden death was heralded about town Sunday morning, it came as a great shock and surprise to Hooper citizens. Although ailing for some time past, he seemed to be in good health and was to be seen about town every day. About Decoration Day he commenced to complain, but nothing serious was thought of this, and on Saturday he was about as usual, and as late as about 11 o'clock that evening he was chatting with Will Schrade at Tunberg's garage. He then left for home and as he stepped upon the porch of his home was overtaken by the attack that caused his demise. His son, Alfred, who lives next door, on hearing groans, surmised that something was wrong. He hastily dressed and went over to his father's place and there found Mr. Stroh hanging over the banister of the porch. He called his sister, Mrs. Anton Tunberg and these two were with him when the end came. The other children were also summoned, but they could not reach home in time. A doctor was called at the same time, but on reaching the bedside and examining the patient gave out the sad news that the end was not far off, and such proved to be the case, death coming to relieve him of this world's sufferings at about 1 o'clock, and thus taking away one who had been a resident of our fair city for nearly half a century, forty-seven years to be exact. His age was 67 years and 6 months. Louis Stroh was born at Kiel, Germany, January 18, 1853. At the age of seventeen he came to America, locating at Chicago. Shortly afterward Davenport, Iowa, claimed him as a resident. In December, 1872, he came to Nebraska, locating at Omaha. This place was his home but a short time, for in 1873 he came to Hooper and has since been a resident of this place. He was united in marriage in 1875 to Henrietta Kallenbach, who preceded him in death on January 21, 1919. To this union were born six children, all of whom still live and are residents of Hooper and its vicinity. Those who remain to mourn the loss of father, and the memory of whom will be ever kept are Mrs. Anton Tunberg, Mrs. C. H. Uehling, Louis, Edward and Alfred and Mrs. Tom Cushman. He is also survived by one brother, Adoph, and a large number of sorrowing friends, whose sympathies are with the bereaved children and relatives. On coming to Hooper in 1873 Mr. Stroh engaged in mason work and this he has followed, along with building contracting, ever since, but for the past few years had not been actively engaged in this work, his health not permitting of it, and a couple of years ago disposed of his interest in the firm of L. Stroh and Son to his son, Alfred. He was an expert in his trade and a large majority of the buildings of this vicinity are evidence of his craft. He was a man well respected by all and a booster for the upbuilding of this community. He was always willing to give whatever was in his power to give to that of which was a help to Hooper, and ready to go to the relief of a brother citizen in sickness or distress. Funeral services were held at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the late home and at the Zion's Lutheran church at 2 o'clock, Rev. J. Schrader having charge at both places. Interment was made in the Hooper cemetery, beside the body of his late wife, and the services there were in charge of Longfellow lodge, No.89, Knights of Pythias, of which the deceased was a charter member. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Hooper Sentinel December 18, 1913 Well Known Men of Hooper Louis Stroh Louis Stroh was born Jan. 18, 1853 at Kiel, Holstein, Germany. At the age of 17, he came to America, alone in 1870, going first to Chicago, where he followed his trade of brick laying and plastering for about two years, after which he went to Davenport, Ia., and after a short stay went up the river stopping for work, going as far as St. Paul. As he did not find work, he retraced his steps coming down to Muscatine, Ia., where he worked in a match factory about three months. Mr. Stroh next went to Omaha, Dec. 22, 1872. He worked at various lines of work until spring, when he went to work on the government postoffice building. Later in the year, he went to Fremont, where he found work at his trade and worked all summer. In the winter of 1873, Mr. Stroh came to Hooper, going out to Oswald Uehling farm, where he done the finishing work on his house. Louis Stroh settled in Hooper in the spring of 1874, where he has since followed his trade. About seven year ago Mr. Stroh started a cement block factory and is still actively engaged in the manufacture of high grade cement product. Louis Stroh was married to Henrietta Kallenbach in 1875, to which union six children were born, all of whom are now living.
