Description	:	Mrs. Louisa Horton Border Mrs. Louisa Horton Border was born at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, September 14, 1835. Read More	Mrs. Louisa Horton Border Mrs. Louisa Horton Border was born at Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, September 14, 1835. She was allowed to enter into her reward March 6, 1925, at the ripe age of 89 years, 5 months and 22 days. “Her warfare ended, her struggle ceased and she hath entered into her rest.” She was married to Nicholas Border at their home in Bedford county, Pennsylvania, on the 25th day of October, 1853. To this union were born eleven children – two girls and nine boys, three having preceded her into the great beyond – Margaret, Leslie and Simon. Her husband was called from her side nineteen years ago on August 23, 1905, leaving her to continue alone the making of the home for her boys. In 1862 they moved to Amestown, Athens county, Ohio, where they resided until 1872 when they showed that spirit which has made possible our great American expansion in pioneering into the great west. The trip was made by team and covered wagon; their family and all their worldly possessions off on the great adventure. At that time Carrollton was the metropolis of this section, being the stop-over station for teaming expeditions on their way farther west. They arrived here late in the fall. The county offices had recently been moved and the old court house became their home through the winter. Their first farm home was over adjoining the present site of the Pleasant Ridge Friends church. After a few changes they moved to the present Border farmstead which was bought by the father at the then running price of $10 per acre. On this farm the home was planted and the family raised the rest of Grandma’s life being spent in this community from this farm. In 1903 their Golden Wedding anniversary was celebrated when the entire family except for Frank, who lives in Montana, were present for that joyous occasion. For over eighty years Grandma Border, as we all lovingly thought of her, has been a faithful-loyal-zealous soldier of the cross. She was the last living charter member of our Carrollton United Brethren church. During my pastorate here Mrs. Catherine Davis, the other living charter member passed on to her reward, and now our last old warrior has laid her armor down. God grant we may have many who shall take it up and carry it on to e’en greater and better victories. Only heaven itself can over record the infinite value to our church and community of her saintly, prayer filled life. Grandma was always at her place in the house of worship until well past 85 years of age and even after that her greatest delight was found when able to be there. One can readily exclaim, “Oh, death where is thy victory, Oh, death where is thy sting,” for such passing is not the ending, but only the beginning – translating to that richer, broader, more blessed life that is Eternal. There are eight children, and three great-great-grand children – a most remarkable record of a five generation group. Seven of the children were able to be present to mourn with us all – Spencer of Norton, Kansas; James of South Sioux City, Nebraska; Lewis of Sioux City, Iowa; William of South Sioux City, Nebraska; Mrs. Allettie Sterner of Murdo, South Dakota; Charles and Riley both of this place. The devotion and care shown Grandma Border by her boys was to her and to us all a cause of heartfelt joy as she drew near the setting of life’s sun. One can but think as her life passes before the minds eye of these words, “So live that when they summons comes to join that innumerable carvan, to that mysterious realm, where each must take his chamber in the silent halls of death, thou go not as the quarry slave at night scouraged to his dungeon, but sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave as one who wraps the draperies of his couch about him and lies down to pleasant dreams.” So was Grandma’s passing from us. God grant it may be as true of us all. A former pastor, Rev. H.V. Riggs, of Mount Auburn, Iowa, was called back to conduct the services, assisted by the pastor, Rev. Seunkel. Her request of text has been for years that thought, “I have fought a good fight, I have kept the faith, I have finished the course, henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness,” and there are surely few whom those words would more truly describe. Interment was made in the Carrollton cemetery beside her husband where she awaits the great call. The pall bearers were James Green, Frank Squires, Jacob Rhodes, Charles Corbin, Edw. Livingston and Roy Anderson. By Grandma’s and the children’s request the sons, “Rock of Ages,” “We’ll never say Good-bye in Heaven,” and “Jesus Savior Pilot Me,” were rendered by the quartet composed of Mrs. Bert Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Wellman Kretzinger and George Textor from Coon Rapidds. Others attending were Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Coppock of LeMars, Iowa; Irvin and Russell Sterner from Des Moines, and Loren L. Border from LaVoy, Wyoming.
