Read More	Nick” Border Suddenly Dies Expires in Hay Field – Was an Early Settler and Highly Esteemed – Father of Eleven Children – All Living The community was shocked Wednesday evening at the announcement of the death of “Nick” Border. He had been sick and though a man of 78, was making a hand in the harvest field. Wednesday he and his son, Leslie, were hauling hay, the father loading and Leslie pitching to him. When the last load was loaded and Leslie had gotten upon it to drive home, he saw that his father was sick, apparently from a fainting spell. Leslie hurried to the house and got some cold water, thinking to revive him, and notifying his mother and younger brother, who had just returned from Nebr. Though but a short time intervened from the time Leslie left his father until he returned, he found his father barely alive when reaching him and life departed before they could convey him home. It is not known just what caused Mr. Border’s death but it is believed that it was paralysis, probably being induced by the extreme heat of Wednesday and probably over exertion. Nicholas Border was born in Bedford county, Pa., in 1833. He was married to Miss Louisa Horton, sister of Capt. Horton, in Pa. in 1854, moving to Ohio in 1862 and by wagon to Iowa in 1872, locating on the present homestead in 1877. Mr. and Mrs. Border were among the older settlers of the county and among the most active in reclaiming it and adding to its improvement and prosperity. The deceased was an unusually industrious and honest man and through his excellent habits and fine example attracted to him a large number of friends who admired his sturdy manhood and enjoyed his social nature. He and his estimable wife, now bowed in her greatest sorrow, united many years ago with the U.B. church at Carrollton, ever since being faithful members of the society. Eleven children were born to them – nine boys and two girls – Spencer Border, now at Norton, Kan., S.F. Border, Coon Rapids, Leslie Border, Carrollton, James and Lewis at Sough Sioux, Nebr., Frank at Livingston, Mont., William at Bonesteel, S.D, Charles at Plainview, Nebr. And Riley, who has just returned from Nebr. Mrs. J.C. Hampton of Coon Rapids and Mrs. Sterner of Plainview, Nebr., the family as is remembered having a great reunion about a year ago, receiving a photograph of President Roosevelt in acknowledgement of a photograph of the family, being such as the family admires. It is hoped that all the children will be able to attend the funeral today at Carrollton at 1 o’clock in the U.B. church, though it is feared that Frank will not be able to receive the announcement of his father’s death in time, living about sixty miles from railroad in Mont. to ranch home. The deceased was an honored member of the Odd Fellow’s lodge at Dedham, which society will have charge of the remains. The family is greatly stricken by the sudden and unexpected death and loss of husband and father, and in their sorrow the entire community extends them their sympathy.
