Mrs. Merriam passed away at 5 o'clock p.m. Wednesday. She had been afflicted for several years but had not been considered dangerous until the last few months, when Dr. Halley, of Kansas City, and the local physicians pronounced her case incurable. Mrs. Merriam was born in Tennessee, the 22 of March, 1845; her maiden name was Lucinda Lisenbee. She moved with her parents to Kansas and was married to Chas. H. Merriam in April 1869 and settled in Cherokee in 1872, where they have since resided and helped to build up the city and its institutions. Mrs. Merriam was an earnest Christian woman, a member of the M.E. church, a woman full of good works. She was an amiable wife, a devoted mother, a kind neighbor and faithful friends. The universal statement of her neighbors is, a good woman has gone and we will miss her. Many times before her death, when suffering great pain, she expressed a desire to depart and be with Christ, where there is no more suffering. She gave good advice to her husband, children, brothers and sisters, asking them to meet her in Heaven. The day before her death, she sent for her pastor and asked him to read the 23d Psalm; he turned and read: The Lord is my Shepherd, etc. She adopted the words as her own and requested the remarks at her funeral to be confined to this chapter. her end was peaceful; she departed to be with her Savior. Funeral services were held at the residence by her pastor, Rev. John Maclean and her remains were interred in the Cherokee cemetery.
