He had been in bad health for the past two years, following a severe siege of the flu. He got up from that sickness with the determination of finishing up some writing which he had contracted to some Eastern publishers, and overworked himself, getting so nervous that he could not sleep, and this was followed by a general breakdown. Will Lisenbee was born in Independence, Mo., Jan. 21, 1857 and came to this part of Kansas with his parents in 1882, and since lived here. For the past thirty-five years he has been writing story and verse for the Eastern publications, many of his writings appearing in the most prominent magazines and periodicals. He had corresponded with many of the best known writers and publishers and many are the letters he has shown the editor of this paper from these men. In fact he was much better known as a writer in the east than he was at home. He was a remarkably well read man. He had but little schooling yet was one of the best posted men on literature and art in the county. He loved the outdoors and spent many summers in the Ozarks. He also did some good paintings. On several occasions he wrote verse for a special meeting or supper given by the old Elite euchre club, which always advocated playing the game square. We have been in close friendship with Will for many years, and know as few people do just how much of a mind he had and his remarkable ability to put his thoughts into words. He had a wonderful imagination – one which caused him to write some extra good stories. Some of the ones printed several years ago in such papers as the Youth's Companion, Ainslee's, etc. have since been again published, which shows they had more than ordinary interest. He was married to Miss Gertrude Norton Nov. 28th, 1895. Besides his widow he leaves three brothers, Payne Lisenbee of Joplin, T.J. Lisenbee of this city, and C.O. Lisenbee of Parsons to mourn his departure. Funeral services were conducted at the home on Monday afternoon by Rev. Molesworth and interment made in the Cherokee cemetery.
