Marece DeVore, daughter of William Edmund and Blanche Butler DeVore was born February 7, 1920, on a farm north of St. Edward. She attended kindergarten "in town", then Dogtown Rural District --- her father driving Marece and neighboring children in a horse-drawn sleigh in the winter. A sickly, anemic girl (until her tonsils were removed when she was 13) who didn't know a windmill had blades, not a solid wheel, until she got glasses, Marece read and played the piano; the viola in the high school orchestra. Marece DeVore, daughter of William Edmund and Blanche Butler DeVore was born February 7, 1920, on a farm north of St. Edward. She attended kindergarten "in town", then Dogtown Rural District --- her father driving Marece and neighboring children in a horse-drawn sleigh in the winter. A sickly, anemic girl (until her tonsils were removed when she was 13) who didn't know a windmill had blades, not a solid wheel, until she got glasses, Marece read and played the piano; the viola in the high school orchestra. After graduating from St. Edward High in 1938, she attended the summer session at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, riding the train Sunday and Friday afternoons, boarding with a college classmate of Blanche's during the week. She taught in country schools and managed the swimming pool in St. Ed, even after her marriage, until Gordon returned from WWII in September, 1945. Married women did not teach when there were husbands at home. Marece spent most of her life teaching rural schools in Boone, Platte and Nance counties, Douglas County, South Dakota, and St. Edward Grade School. At the time of her death, she was a substitute art and music teacher for the Grand Island school system. Mrs. Jenkins was a charter member of the Wesleyan Service Guild, a member of the St. Edward United Methodist Church, Nebraska Professional Education Association, American Legion Auxiliary and Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW. She passed away at the Lutheran Hospital in Grand Island, Nebraska on Monday, August 29, 1977, at the age of 57 years. Funeral services were held at 2 PM Thursday, September 1, 1977 from the United Methodist Church, St. Edward, with the Rev. Cecil B. Green officiating. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
