This Newspaper Article Appeared in the Valentine Democrat October 24, 1918 INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC VERY SERIOUS – TWO DEATHS HERE The epidemic of the Spanish Influenza now touches practically every town in the state and for that matter in the entire country, taking a toll of death in practically every place. Here in Valentine, there were two deaths last Sunday night and some others of the patients are reported to be in a critical condition, but we have been a little more fortunate than many other places, as we have not merely as many cases or deaths as have been reported from other localities. It is probably true that some of these reports are greatly exaggerated, but it is a fact that this is the most terrible scourge that has ever visited our people, and it is no time to attempt to minimize the dangers or to conceal the true facts. Our having comparatively few cases is probably due to precautions taken as every public gathering has been stopped and mayor has issued orders that there shall be no congregating or groups or crowds and that children must remain at home. Those who died here were MISS MABEL THOMPSON aged 16 years, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Thompson and a small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Bunnell.
