Read More	McMILLAN, MABEL—Mabel McMillan was born to Lillian and Bertram Rumsey on October 9, 1903, at New Conception, Mo., and passed away June 10, 1992, at the Covina Convalescent Center in Covina, Ca., at the age of 88 years, 8 months and 1 day. Mabel’s early school years were in Charleston, Mo. Her family moved to Geneva when she was in high school. She wanted to be an actress or opera star, but instead became a school teacher. She taught one semester in a one room school house and also taught kindergarten and high school vocal music in Geneva. She attended the University of Nebraska and then UCLA, where she met Francis Duncan McMillan, better known as Mac. They were united in marriage at the Little Church of the Flowers at Forest Lawn I Glendale, Cal., on December 26, 1928. To this union three children were born, Jean, Roderick and Margaret. The following year the Great Depression hit, and although they moved around a lot, to Bakersfield, San Francisco, and back to Los Angeles, Mac was always able to find work. They moved to Eagle Rock in 1936 and lived there until Mac passed away. Although they never owned a home and seldom their own car, they left their children with a rich heritage of the value of education, music, reading and service to youth. But most of all the children were taught that Jesus was their best friend, and most of their non-school hours were spent in church activities. Mabel was active in the PTA. She also was gifted with a beautiful voice and sang for many funerals and weddings. In 1978 she hopped on a train with all her worldly goods and went to live in Winona, Minn. While she was there she became involved in the support of the Performing Arts, went to the Presbyterian Church and once again sang in the choir, and took some classes at Winona State University. In January of 1988, she went to live with Rod and Natalie in Phoenix, Az., and then in 1989 she returned to California to live near Margaret. She lived for one year at Villa Colima, a residence for seniors in Walnut and had been at the Covina Convalescent Center for a year and a half where she quickly became a favorite with all the nurses. Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Francis McMillan; daughter, Jean; brother, Judson; and a grandson, Kent. She is survived by her son Roderick; daughter, Margaret Frazier, 10 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Graveside services were conducted from the Geneva Public Cemetery on Monday, June 15, 1992, with the Rev. Stan Rider officiating. The Nebraska Signal June 1992
