DIED LAST SATURDAY Came To Crisfield From Holland Island 26 Years Ago FUNERAL SERVICES HELD ON MONDAY AFTERNOON One of the city's most prominent and highly respected residents, Mr. Major Carroll Todd, Sr., died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Parks, on Maryland Avenue, last Saturday evening at 7.00 o'clock. Mr. Todd had been an invalid for several years, yet on Saturday morning he seemed in fair health and good spirits. Early in the afternoon, however, he suffered a paralytic stroke which caused his death a few hours later. Born on Holland's Island, he was the son of the late George Todd and Mary Price Todd, of that place, and would have been 76 years of age the 4th of next month, February. In 1918 he moved to Crisfield, but with his wife, Annie Elizabeth Todd, who died in July, 1940, spent the summer months on the Island, for some years. Mr. Todd was a member of a family that is well known all over the Chesapeake bay area. Most of the Todd family, and relations by marriage, have been engaged for many years in various forms of the seafood industry. They have been successful fishermen, have freighted various commodities to all parts of the bay, and their reputation for industry, integrity, and ability is widespread. He was a Christian gentleman of the old fashioned school, and reared his family within the church. A staunch Methodist, he affiliated with Immanuel Methodist Church when they moved to Crisfield, and as long as his health permitted, attended that church regularly. A man of commanding presence, he had a fine sense of humor, developed perhaps because of an affliction of deafness that came to him earlier in life. When, in the days before illness confined him to his home, he came down the street, he was greeted on all sides by friends, and his pleasure because of this contact with people was very apparent. The loss of his wife was a blow from which he never recovered. When she died his own health was not so good, and it probably is a fact that his desire to live gradually ebbed until he went out with the tide at sundown Saturday. During the days of his illness all that loving and capable hands could do and minds conceive for his comfort, was done, and as he lay on his sick bed day after day, going over in his mind's experiences of his youth into manhood, he must have gotten his greatest satisfaction in the knowledge that the family he had raised was a credit to him and to his beloved wife, and to the community in which they reside. Funeral services were held at the home of his on, Ira T. Todd, on Maryland Avenue, Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, with Dr. Melvin E. Wheatley, pastor of Immanuel Methodist Church conducting them. Burial was beside his wife in Sunnyridge Park Cemetery. His pallbearers were six of his grandsons. His funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends, and the many and beautiful floral pieces sent to honor his memory were tokens of the high regard and respect in which he was held. Mr. Todd is survived by three sons, Ira T. Todd, George Todd, and Major C. Todd, Jr., and three daughters, Mrs. Beulah White of Perryville, Md., Mrs. Susie Parks, and Mrs. Alice Parks of this city.
