CAVINESS, PROMINENT IN BUSINESS, DIES Death came this morning to Mandley C. Caviness, native of Jefferson county and prominent Fairfield business man for over 35 years. He passed away about 4:45 a.m. at the Jefferson county hospital following a long illness. Caviness had been in the Coal and lumber business in Fairfield since 1912 when he went to work for the Cable Lumber company at that time. During the long span of years that followed, he built up his own business and took an active part in the business and social affairs of the community. Last rites will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church with Dr. L. B. Weis in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The body is at the Weston Behner funeral home. During the many years Caviness was in the coal business he experienced vast developments in marketing trends and methods of handling. He entered the business when coal was transported in horse drawn wagons and all of it was moved by hand. After completing his education, Caviness started to work for the Cable Lumber company in 1912 and after three years purchased his own business. In 1917, he went to Afton, Iowa, where he was manager of a lumber company. In 1920, he again entered the coal business in Fairfield and later sold out to the Block company and remained with the firm as manager. For several years the firm was located west of the Rock Island tracks on W. Burlington street. When the right-of-way was changed through Fairfield the coal yards were moved across the tracks to the east. Caviness purchased the Block company in 1935 and had operated the firm as his own since. His son, Paul, in January 1950 as a partner, and in May the same year they expanded the business to include lumber, cement materials, contracting and construction. The lumber and contracting portion of the firm to new quarters west of Fairfield June 24, 1950. The coal yards remain near the railroad right-of-way. Mandley C. Caviness, 60, was born Aug. 28, 1892 on a farm east of Fairfield, the son of the late Kirby (sic. Eli Kirby Caviness) and Elizabeth Fisher Caviness. He attended country schools and business college in Fairfield. He was united in marriage on Feb. 24, 1912 to Gail Stanford, who survives. The wedding took place in Fairfield. Caviness was a member of the Methodist church, Rotary club, Odd Fellows, Eagles, Knights of Pythias, and was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce over a long period of years. He held several important offices in the organizations and served on many important committees. Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Shan Campbell; and two sons, Jack and Paul Caviness, all of Fairfield. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; two brothers, L. C. Caviness and Emery Caviness, both of Oak Grove, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. W. E. Rains, Fairfield, and Mrs. Bessie Larson, Portland, Ore. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Leland and one sister. --------- Note: See memorial (with obituary) for son Paul Edwin Caviness, 1919-2012. Another son, Jack Caviness, evidently is deceased prior to Paul's death in 2012; where is Jack buried ??. There is a Jack W Caviness, died 1996, buried in California but it isn't known yet to this contributor if that is the same son or another person.
