Margaret Ann Richey was born in Wayne County, Ohio, January 4, 1832, and died at her home in Dayton, March 6, 1922, aged 90 years, 2 months, 2 days. Her girlhood was spent in the community of her birth, and she was united in marriage at Wooster, Ohio, March 16, 1850 to Cyrus Burnett, who preceded her to the Great Beyond August 31, 1907. She and her family came to Webster County, Iowa, in 1857, and settled on a farm five miles southeast of Dayton, where they lived until 1884, when they purchased the home and moved into town, where she lived the remainder of her days. Four children, three sons and a daughter, were born of their union. Two sons have passed before her, Edwin Curtis in 1883 and William L. in his 37th year. A son and the daughter, Howard and Jennie, two grandchildren, Mrs. Ruth O'Connell of Des Moines and Cyrus L. Burnett of Washington, D.C., also a great granddaughter, Marjorie O'Connell, survive with a sister, Mrs. Henrietta Daughenbaugh of Des Moines, now in Long Beach, California, and a brother, Jas. F. Richey of Boone, Iowa, to mourn her passing. Her funeral was held Wednesday afternoon of last week from the M. E. church, Rev. Walker conducting the services and her remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband in Dayton cemetery. The life of Mrs. Burnett was a useful one to this community. Settlers were few and far between when she and Mr. Burnett was cast their lot in this then frontier, but always she took an interest in the things that meant for better life, for community improvement, and for the building up of citizenship. She was congenial in her friendships, loved to discuss the problems of the times as they developed in the history of the period, and took a deep interest in the accomplishments of the neighbors in her community as well, giving of her impressions and her advice and encouragement. Before infirmity confined her to her home, she loved to meet with her associates, and her visits among the business places on our streets always left something of value from the philosophy of her splendid life. In the home she was a loving wife and mother, and there the deep loss is felt in her passing, but she will be remembered among the lifelong friends sympathize as well. She lived to a good old age, and her life was rich in its memories and the encouragements that always came from them. Hers was indeed a life of duties well done, and this community is enriched by the high standards she lived among us.
