Margaret Jane Brown, 86, died November 18, 2012 in the arms of her two daughters in Big Timber, Montana. Born to Alvhild and Stuart Nicholson on December 2, 1925, some of Margaret's most cherished memories come from her childhood in McLeod, Montana beside the Boulder River. Margaret graduated from Sweetgrass High School in Big Timber, Montana in 1943. "Maggie" moved to Alaska in the late 1940's with her cousin and best friend, Marian Nicholson. Photos from this era portray a beautiful young woman, footloose and fancy-free. In 1950, Margaret married Thomas R. Brown in Juneau, Alaska. They raised four children while living in Alaska, Montana and Washington. Margaret loved her home and friends in Vancouver, Washington where she lived for over 50 years. Marge, Juanita, Maureen, Lila, Nan, and Donna, all adoring girlfriends, shared many a good time. Although Margaret returned to her roots in Big Timber, Montana in 1999 and found new joys in being close to her daughters and siblings, the miles between the two states caused a deep sadness. Her health made travel no longer possible. Margaret loved the sound of laughter and inspired many a smile. She enjoyed political discussions and had heartfelt compassion for the human condition. She was a proud Democrat, enjoyed cooking, gardening, long walks, her crossword puzzle and her afternoon cocktail. She was an accomplished seamstress, making her daughters' prom dresses, school outfits, and doll clothes. She continued to sew for her grandchildren. Margaret's spiritual faith helped guide her days. She was a lifelong Episcopalian. She was a member of the Sweetgrass Museum Society and was proud of her Montana heritage dating back to the 1800's. Much of her family's history is documented at the Crazy Mountain Museum in Big Timber, Montana. In 2007, Margaret moved to Boulder Meadows Assisted Living in Big Timber where she made new friends. Her husband, Thomas, died in 2005. Her parents, brothers, Walter and Charles Nicholson, and many beloved pets, also predeceased her. Margaret's most meaningful joy in life was her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter, Janie Brown Camp (William Hjortsberg) of Livingston, Montana; son, Jeffrey Brown (Carol) of Girdwood, Alaska; daughter, Jill Brown of Big Timber, Montana; and son, Jonathan Brown (Cindy) of Yacolt, Washington. Grandchildren include: Jake Camp of Denver, Colorado, Cheyenne Brown of Scotland, Johannah Brown of Seattle, Washington and Christopher Norem of Big Timber, Montana. Great-grandchildren are: Dillon, Alejandro and Bechler - all from Denver, Colorado. Her siblings, Dorothy Hooper, and John Nicholson, also survive Margaret, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends she dearly loved. A memorial service was held on November 24, 2012 at St. Marks Episcopal Church in Big Timber, Montana. Published in The Columbian, Vancouver, WA on December 2, 2012
