The death of Maggie, as she was familiarly called by her numerous friends, had been expected for several weeks, as she was gradually failing since her return from Dubuque, whither she went in vain for relief, yet her death had spread gloom over her many friends and fellow-teachers who all hoped that she might be spared to resume her labors in a profession in which she was singularly efficient and successful. Yet deep as is the sorrow of those who were linked to her by the ties of fellowship, it cannot compare to the profound depth of despondency, and grief, which prevails in her family, in which her early death has caused a void which cannot be filled. Were we able, gladly we would pour into the bosom of this stricken family the balm of comfort, but alas! of what avail are our feeble efforts to them who have, within the space of a few months, been bereft of a fond and loving father, and a noble daughter and sister. Endowed by nature with that true benevolence, which finds its greatest satisfaction in doing good to her fellow-creatures, she close (sic/chose) the arduous profession of teacher in our public schools, not for the paltry emolument that is meted out to us teachers, but for the delight she took in leading the young towards the boon of education. And that her efforts were crowned with success, can best be shown by the results of her labors in the schools of Clayton county. Margaret L. Fallon was born in Garnavillo, Clayton County, Iowa, on the 30th. day of Oct. 1862. She received her education in the home schools, and at the graded school at Elkader. She entered upon her profession as teacher, in 1882, and not until emaciated by disease, and marked for an early grave did she relinquish her task. The best medical aid that her loving family could procure was called to her relief, but the dread disease had fastened its talons upon her and on Sunday morning death relived her from suffering. Her remains were conveyed to the Catholic cemetery in Garnavillo on Tuesday, a large concourse of sorrowing friends following. Rev. Father Reilly of Elkader performed the last sad rites and all that was mortal of a once noble woman was hidden from view. Peace to her ashes.
