Description	:	Maria Wiebe was born March 8, 1915 in Saratov, Soviet Union, to Jacob J. and Anna S. Wiebe. Her father was born in Germany, but had moved to Russia with his wife and family. When the Bolsheviks had the revolution in Russia, under Stalin, Jacob J. sent his wife and three small children to the United States. The Beatrice Mennonite Church sponsored them, and my mother (born in 1918) changed country schools so that she could help Maria's brother Yosh in school (he knew Russian and German; mom knew German and English). Her father remained for... Read More	Maria Wiebe was born March 8, 1915 in Saratov, Soviet Union, to Jacob J. and Anna S. Wiebe. Her father was born in Germany, but had moved to Russia with his wife and family. When the Bolsheviks had the revolution in Russia, under Stalin, Jacob J. sent his wife and three small children to the United States. The Beatrice Mennonite Church sponsored them, and my mother (born in 1918) changed country schools so that she could help Maria's brother Yosh in school (he knew Russian and German; mom knew German and English). Her father remained for a time in Russia. Then came the day that a neighbor of theirs came to the house: Tonight we come. Make sure you stand in front of me, and when we shoot, you fall into the big grave we will have you and the others dig. I will shoot, but miss you. When the soldiers come tramping over, lie still, and pretend death, so they don't kill you with their bayonets. So Jacob did that, and lived, and made his way to Beatrice, Nebraska. Great was the rejoicing, for they feared he was dead. Then Maria and her family lived on a farm owned by the Andreas family east of town. I and my family later lived there, and oh, we loved the flowers and trees that Maria's mother and father planted by the little single-story house. Maria did have a Social Security number, that she got in California.
