Description	:	John D. Wiebe was born in Saratov, Soviet Union September 1, 1912 to Jacob J. and Anna S. Wiebe. He came to Beatrice, but later moved to Mennonite communities in Newton, Kansas and Hesston, Kansas. His last residence was in Hesston, but his body was brought back to First Mennonite Cemetery, Beatrice, Nebraska for burial. John D. married Gertrude Goossen on August 29, 1940 in Beatrice, Nebraska. After her death, he married Evelyn Friesen on 20 Jan 1978. Evelyn had been married to Nick Wiens in her first marriage. His father was born in Germany, but had moved to Russia with his family. When the Bolsheviks had the revolution in Russia, under Stalin, Jacob J. sent his wife and three small children to the United States. The Beatrice Mennonite Church sponsored them, and my mother (born in April, 1918) changed country schools so that she could help Yosh in school (he knew Russian and German; mom knew German and English). His father remained for a time in Russia. Then came the day that a neighbor of theirs came to the house: Tonight we come. Make sure you stand in front of me, and when we shoot, you fall into the big grave we will have you and the others dig. I will miss, and not shoot you. When the soldiers come tramping over, lie still, and pretend death, so they don't kill you with their bayonets. So Jacob did that, and lived, and made his way to Beatrice, Nebraska. Great was the rejoicing, for they feared he was dead. Then Jacob and Anna their family lived on a farm owned by the Andreas family east of town.
