He was taken to the hospital Sunday evening, February 22. Funeral services will held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph church, with the Rt Rev Monsignor P.T. Lynch offering the requiem mass. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. The body is resting until the time of the rites at the Olerich Funeral home, where the rosary will be prayed at 8 o'clock tonight and also Tuesday night. Mr. Ryan had served in the county treasurer's office here 35 years. His tenure of office exceeds that of any other Carroll county treasurer and probably that, of any other county treasurer in the state of Iowa. Before going into the county treasurers office under the late William Langenfeld, he taught school in Carroll and Crawford county. He was born February 28, 1880, in Moultrie county, Illinois a son of James and Nora Madigan Ryan. His mother was a sister of the late Thomas Madigan of Carroll. When he was one and one-half years old the family came to Carroll county, locating on the old Ryan homestead west of Carroll. Mr. Ryan attended St. Joseph school here while the late Rev. Fr O'Connor was pastor. In 1902 he graduated from St. Bernard's school at Breda. Then he attended Denison Normal and Business college for one year. After receiving his teacher's certificate, he taught Wheatland township school No. 9 for two years. His next teaching position was at the town school in Lanesboro. This was followed by one year's attendance at Iowa State Teachers college, Cedar Falls. For the ensuing three years he taught at Ralston. He was elected next to the faculty at Deloit, Crawford county, where he taught until he was appointed deputy county treasurer. Two well-known Carroll pioneers who served under Mr. Ryan as deputies in the treasurer's office were the late C.C. Colclo, who was also a newspaper publisher and state checker, and the late Joseph Kempker, who had a long period of service in the office, part of the time as treasurer. After leaving the treasurer's office, Mr. Ryan was appointed state guard of the penitentiary at Lincoln, Neb., by then Governor Dwight M. Griswold, who is now in charge of American aid to the government of Greece. He continued in that capacity until July 1, 1945, when, because of failing health, he returned to his home here. Mr. Ryan was married July 3, 1906 at Cedar church, Greene county, to Julia Carey of Churdan, who survives. Also surviving are four children: Joseph, Omaha; Paul; Sr. M. Innocence (Ellen), who teaches school at Edgar, Wis.; and Mrs. John DeMott (Marie), 6120 43rd street, Hyattsville, Md.; two grandchildren in the DeMott family; and one sister, Mrs. M.L. Collison (Florence), Carroll. One son died in infancy while the family lived at Lanesboro. Mr. Ryan's mother died March 14, 1920, and his father, September 28, 1931. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Daniel, January 16, 1940, and three sisters, Nettie Ryan, March 8, 1900; Nellie, in July 1913, and Mrs. W.J. Barloon (Minnie), March 23, 1937. Mr. Ryan was a member of St. Joseph parish and the Holy Name society. He had belonged to Charles Carroll Council No. 780, Knights of Columbus, for 3S years.
