A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Scotia United Methodist Church. The Rev. Toni Nolze will officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Scotia. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Marjorie Eva Mae was born Nov. 12, 1914, at Loup City to Stephen Elba and Clara Merium (Bulger) Smalley. When Marjorie was 4, her mother Clara passed away during the influenza epidemic of 1918. Marjorie lived with her Aunt Myrtle Evertt in Ord, where she started school. Marjorie then returned to Loup City and her father married Edna Grace Daddow Lambert. Marjorie graduated from Loup City High School in 1933. Following high school, Marjorie taught country school in the Davis Creek area near Loup City. While teaching, she met Harry Edward Spencer. The couple was united in marriage on May 4, 1935. To this union three children were born — Marcia, Dean and Linda. The couple first lived on a farm near Loup City, and then moved to Marjorie’s parents’ farm and later into Loup City. After relocating several times due Harry’s work, they made a final move to a farm southwest of Scotia, where they spent the rest of the married life. A year after Harry’s death, Marjorie moved into Scotia. She had lived at Brookefield Park the last three years. Marjorie was a member of the Scotia United Methodist Church, Daughters of Faith and Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, her daily coffee group and dancing with Harry in their younger days. She took many enjoyable trips with her son, Dean, traveling to Hawaii, Canada, Alaska, the Scandinavian countries, Germany, France, Italy and Great Britain, plus many other trips throughout the United States. Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Marcia and Darrel Vance of Scotia and Linda Swanson of Seward; one son, Dean Spencer of Brookfield, Wis.; three grandchildren, David Vance, Michelle Linke and Jim Swanson; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy McBride of Lincoln. She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-mother; husband, Harry; a son-in-law, Wayne Swanson; two infant grandchildren; and a brother, Charles Lambert.
