Hoskins, In Business Here 32 years, Dies Mark E. Hoskins, funeral director in Fairfield for 32 years, passed away last night at the Jefferson county hospital after an illness of only a few hours. The death was caused by a heart attack. He became ill during the early morning hours on Tuesday and was admitted to the hospital a few hours later. His death came at 7:15 p.m. last night. Mr. Hoskins had been a funeral director in Fairfield since 1922 and had been a licensed embalmer since 1907, a period of almost a half century. While operating his business in Fairfield, Mark Hoskins also took an active part in social and civic affairs. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, the Masons, Elks lodge, Lions club, I.O.O.F., Knights of Pythias and the Eagles. He was also a longtime member of the Chamber of Commerce. For many years he staged an oyster supper for the peace officers, firemen and other public servants in appreciation of their services rendered to the community. He was well known throughout the community and enjoyed a host of friends. After receiving his license as an embalmer in 1907, Hoskins first went to work for an undertaking firm at Webster City, Ia. From there he returned to Des Moines, and with a partner started up in business. After several years he sold his interest and moved to Ollie where he was in the furniture and undertaking business for six years. He moved to Keota, was in business there for six years, and then sold out to take a position as salesman for an undertaker's supply company. In 1922 he moved to Fairfield and bought the undertaking business from J. T. Davies. It was then located in what was known as the Crawford building on the southeast corner of the square where the Bruner jewelry store is now located. Five years later Hoskins purchased the building where the business in now located and it has been there since. The family living quarters are on the second floor. RITES TUESDAY Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian church with Dr. C. R. Douglass in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The body will be taken from the Hoskins funeral home to the church at 1 p.m. Mark E. Hoskins, 71, was born Nov. 28, 1882, in Jefferson county. He was the son of the late Nathan and Ladoska (sic. Lodoska) Kinney Hoskins. He was united in marriage on Oct. 21, 1913, to Pearl Manning, who survives. The wedding took place at Iowa City. He attended the Hohenschuh-Carpenter School of Embalming in Des Moines, receiving his license in 1907. He moved to Fairfield in 1922 and had been a resident of this community ever since. Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. A. T. West, McCredie, Mo., and two grandchildren, David and Jennifer. An announcement was made this morning that the Hoskins funeral home will continue business as usual with Jack L. Raymond (sic. Jack Lloyd Raymond) as manager. The firm will continue its same ambulance and funeral service.
