BARNES, Ph.D., age 84, resident of Worthington, Ohio and native of Fairfield, Iowa passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 2, 2006 in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. BARNES was proud to be an Iowan and always felt strongly connected to Fairfield, where his talent as a pianist and his love for music were encouraged as he grew up. He went on to study composition at the University of Iowa and received B.M., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from that institution. He did additional study at the Julliard School of Music in New York City. Dr. BARNES served on the faculties of the University of Iowa, Trinity University in San Antonio, Interlochen National Music Camp, and Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa where he met his wife, artist Dorothy Gill BARNES. He was professor of Composition and Music Theory at the Ohio State University from 1957 until his retirement in 1988. He continued to teach music privately, and at the Columbus College of Art and Design. Dr. BARNES was a mentor to many wonderful students who have become friends over the years. Performances of Dr. BARNES'S compositions have taken place at the Kennedy Center and Madison Square Garden. His published compositions include music for piano, voice, and chorus, and he has composed commissioned work for the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra, the Welsh Hills Symphony Orchestra, ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, Cantari Singers of Columbus, the City of Worthington and many other groups. Dr. BARNES also judged for the National Guild of Piano teachers. He was a member of the Ohio Music Teachers Association, National Association for Music Education (MENC), Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), and Phi Kappa Phi. Dr. BARNES surrounded himself with a diverse group of friends who had a great variety of backgrounds and interests to share. His wide network of family, friends, students, and colleagues will miss his kindness, gentleness, and keen and mischievous wit. In addition to his musical pursuits, he enjoyed the out-of-doors, reading, and winning at Scrabble, and he took great pleasure in the accomplishments of his family, offering his generous support to all their endeavors. Dr. BARNES was preceded in death by his parents Charles M. BARNES and May Turner BARNES. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Gill BARNES, children David (Miki), Gordon (Deborah), Ted, and Juliet (Robert Kaeding) BARNES, grandchildren Alison, Aaron (Elizabeth), and Clara BARNES, and one more on the way, and two great-grandchildren. A Graveside Gathering will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 15, 2006 at Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Ohio State University School of Music, 1501 Neil Ave, Suite 020, Columbus, OH, 43201. Contributions marked "in memory of Dr. Marshall H. BARNES" will be directed to help fund student scholarships in music.
