Description	:	Marshall L. Farnsworth was born in Collins, Erie County in western New York, the fourth of ten children born to the blacksmith Calvin David Farnsworth and his wife Lydia M. (Nichols) Farnsworth. His father became a Baptist minister and around 1850 moved the family to the Iowa frontier to become an itinerate preacher and establish Baptist churches in northeastern Iowa and southeastern Minnesota. Farnsworth was born in Collins, Erie County in western New York, the fourth of ten children born to the blacksmith Calvin David Farnsworth and his wife Lydia M. (Nichols) Farnsworth. His father became a Baptist minister and around 1850 moved the family to the Iowa frontier to become an itinerate preacher and establish Baptist churches in northeastern Iowa and southeastern Minnesota. Thus Marshall spent his early years living and working as a farm hand in the Iowa towns of Colesburg, Delhi, York, Strawberry Point, and Plainfield. Around 1870 Marshall moved to the Hamilton area of Fillmore/Mower County, Minnesota where he established a blacksmith business. On November 1, 1872 he married Mary Edith Payne in Spring Valley, Minnesota. From this union was born Nellie, Herbert, Edgar, Colonel, and Elwin. When the railroad bypassed the town of Hamilton in favor of nearby Racine, MN, his business likely faltered, so in 1902 Marshall moved with his wife and sons to Edgeley, LaMoure County, North Dakota. Marshall initially established a blacksmith business in Edgeley, North Dakota, which he turned over to his son Edgar, and then bought land and started farming 3.5 miles southeast of town. In 1917 when his youngest son Elwin got married and took over the farm, Marshall and Mary Farnsworth moved into a house in Edgeley built by his son-in-law James Edward "Ed" Woods. The last remaining years of his life were spent living in this home in Edgeley. Marshall was wiry in stature, strict with his children, a perfectionist, and subject to bouts of depression later in life.
