Read More	Another Knox County Pioneer Settler Called to Her Reward Martha Brooks was born at Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on September 29, 1839, the second eldest of nine children. She was married to William H. Saunders November 21, 1856. To this union were born six children, three sons and three daughters, two sons dying in infancy, the third son, William H. Saunders Jr. of Winnetoon, passed away April 12, 1919. The family came to Nebraska in the spring of 1872 locating at Bazile Mills, where they took up a homestead joining Bazile Mills and started the first hardware store, Wm. H. Saunders Sr., being the pioneer hardware merchant of Knox county. They continued to reside on the old homestead and conduct the hardware store under the firm name of Wm. H. Saunders & Son until his death September 2, 1890, when the only son, Wm. H. Saunders took charge of the business and for many years conducted the general hardware store in Bazile Mills until the Bazile store was sold to his brother-in-law, Asa P. Cave, and Wm. H. Saunders Jr. moved to Winnetoon and purchased the hardware business and conducted same under the old firm name, Wm. H. Saunders & Son until his death in 1919. The Saunders name is numbered with the early, prominent old settlers of Knox county and the passing away of Grandma Saunders makes us realize the pioneer settlers are rapidly passing from among us and their places will not be easily filled. She has been a member of the Congregational Church since early youth and for a number of years has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Louise M. Cave. Mrs. Saunders passed away March 8, 1923, after a brief illness at the age of 83 years, 5 months and 19 days. Those of the immediate family left to mourn are her three daughters, Mrs. Caroline B. Kannow, May, Nebr.; Mrs. Lydia S. Gay, Belle Fouche, S.D.; Mrs. Louise M. Cave, Winnetoon, Nebr.; one sister, Mrs. Sanford Saunders of Creighton, besides thirteen grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends. She was loved and revered by neighbors and friends, both at the old home in Bazile Mills and the new home here in Winnetoon, where she has resided for the past three years with her daughter, Mrs. Cave. Funeral services were held in the M.E. church in Winnetoon Sunday morning, March 11 at 11 o'clock conducted by the Rev. Z.M. Bressler and interment made in the Creighton cemetery by the side of her husband. A large number of friends were present to assist in the last sad ceremonies that neighbors can perform and the beautiful floral offerings were a silent tribute to the high esteem in which this Grand Old Lady was held.
