She was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Grooms who lived near Sparks, Nebr. Martha grew to womanhood in the Sparks community and on September 27, 1905 she was married to David E. Owens. Date of birth 8 Aug 1885, Sparks, Cherry Co., NE Died 10 Nov 1970, Valentine, Cherry Co., NE Obituary Martha Grooms Owens was born August 8, 1885 and passed away November 10, 1970 at the age of 85 years. She was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Grooms who lived near Sparks, Nebr. Martha grew to womanhood in the Sparks community and on September 27, 1905 she was married to David E. Owens. They made their home in the Sparks neighborhood which was their permanent home until Mr. Owens died on August 10, 1944. The couple had no children of their own but they raised Russel Grooms, Martha's nephew, from childhood and Russel has been as a son to her all through the years. When Mr. Owens passed away in 1944, Mrs. Owens moved to Valentine which has been her home until her death. She was a member of Methodist Women's Society of Christian Service and the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. Martha was preceded in death by six brothers. Survivors are Russel Grooms; her brother, Frank, who lives in Wounded Knee, S. D.; her sister Mrs. Elsie Kuskie, Ft. Laramie, Wyoming; and a number of nieces, nephews, and distant relatives. Funeral services were at United Methodist Church in Valentine on Nov. 13 and burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Valentine.
