OBITUARY-- Funeral services were held Friday afternoon for Mrs. Mathias Halla, 80 year old pioneer mother of Yankton county, whose death occurred at Viborg. Rev. Ole M. Odland conducted the services which were held at the Trinity Lutheran church in Yankton following a short service at the Chris Halla home near the state hospital. Mr. Halla, a son of the deceased, has been ill for several months. He was not able to attend the funeral service at church. Internment was in the Vangen Lutheran cemetery at Mission Hill. Martha Skrukrudbaken was born at Ringsaker, Hedmark, Norway, January 26, 1851 and grew to womanhood near the place of her birth. She was married to Mathias Halla at the age of 24 years and the first years of their married life were spent in Norway. Mr. Halla was among the earliest settlers of Yankton county coming here in 1868 when he filed on a homestead northwest of Mission Hill. He was a bachelor then and lived on his homestead until he had proven up on it. He then returned to Norway where he married. After remaining in Norway for a few years Mr. and Mrs. Halla and family came directly to Yankton county arriving here in 1886. She had thus been a resident of the community for 44 years and is one of the heads of pioneer families. Mrs. Halla's husband died about eight years ago. Surviving are seven children, Mrs. Louis Levison, Viborg; Chris and Conrad Halla, Thunderhawk; Mrs. Harry Fisk, Kansas City, and Henry Halla, Tyndall, also 13 grandchildren. Four children of Mrs. Halla preceded her in death.
