Description	:	The 1865 Rinsaker census shows Mathias Halla's real name was Mathias Christensen, born in 1841. His occupation was listed as blacksmith. He lived with his mother, Johanne Torkildsdatter, brother Hans Christensen (a lumberer), and Anthonette Pedersdatter ("foster daughter" of Johanne.) When he immigrated to America, his name became Mathias Halla OBITUARY-- Mathias Halla, one of Yankton county's pioneers, passed away last Sunday morning. Death was due to complications from which he was not strong enough to recover, being in his 81st year. He was born December 24, 1841 at Ringsaker, Hedmark, Norway, and there he grew to manhood. At the age of 26 years he came to America, arriving at New York May 3, 1867. He came west, spending the year at LaCrosse, Wisconsin. In 1868 he, together with several other pioneers of Yankton County, came to this county, where he homesteaded what is now the Mark Johnson farm north and west of Mission Hill. This trip westward was made on foot, the baggage of the pioneers being hauled on an ox-cart. In 1874, Mr. Halla returned to Norway where he made his home for 12 years. He was married to Martha Evenson who still survives him. In 1886 with his wife and four children he returned to this country in Yankton county where he spent the rest of his life on the farm near the Jim River north of this city. To this union were born eleven children. Four of the children died in infancy, and a son, Evan died at the age of 21 in the year 1902. He is survived by a wife and seven children; Mrs. Louie Levison of Viborg; Chris and Conrad who live north of Yankton; Carl of Washington, D.C.; Theodore, a student at the State University at Vermillion; Mrs. Harry Fisk of Yankton; and Henry from Avon. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the home, and at 2:30 at the Vangen Lutheran Church, Mission Hill. Rev. Ole M. Odland of Yankton, assisted by Rev. O.V. Smeby, pastor of Vangen Church will officiate. Interment will take place at the Vangen Cemetery, Mission Hill.
