Description	:	Martha Jane Burrage Fraley was born on March 30, 1857 on the eastside next to the Yadkin River in Rowan County, North Carolina. Her parents are James Burrage and Susan Carrick Burrage, and they had been married about ten years by 1857 when Martha Jane was born. Her birth was only a short time before the War Between the States, and her father James Burrage would enlist as a Private in Rowan County, N.C. on July 15, 1861 for the War. Read More	Martha Jane Burrage Fraley was born on March 30, 1857 on the eastside next to the Yadkin River in Rowan County, North Carolina. Her parents are James Burrage and Susan Carrick Burrage, and they had been married about ten years by 1857 when Martha Jane was born. Her birth was only a short time before the War Between the States, and her father James Burrage would enlist as a Private in Rowan County, N.C. on July 15, 1861 for the War. How much of a personal memory Martha had of her father James Burrage later in life was limited as basically she was only 4 years old in 1861. Over the last two years of his life James Burrage was in Co. D, 10th Regiment N.C.S.T., and was attached to the 1st Regiment N.C. Artillery. It is reported that James Burrage died at Richmond, VA., on December 23, 1863 of disease, and the above military information is according to the book: " N.C. Troops 1861 - 1865 Vol. 1 Artillery" on page 78 compiled by: Louise H. Manarin. Martha Jane Burrage was age 6 years 8 months and 23 days old on the day that her father James Burrage passed away, so she was old enough to witness the lost within her family. The family recovered the body of James Burrage from Richmond, VA., and did bring him home to Rowan County, North Carolina for proper funeral too. Martha Jane Burrage had to grow up without her real daddy, and go through reconstruction years after the end of the War Between the States. This would have made a lasting impression on her life, and yet she did survive and thrive. Martha Jane Burrage waited until she was age 21 years 10 months and 13 days old to get married to George Washington Fraley on February 13, 1879.
