Camper retired from that business in 1900 and joined a woodworking department at Feininger & Heberline for nine years. Passes Away at Age of 91; Was one of Early Residents of California and Chico. Crossed Plains With Two Companions in 1850; Was Old Member of Odd Fellows. H.W. Camper, pioneer resident of Chico and one of the best known and respected citizens of this section, died at his home, 4743 Fifth street, yesterday morning. He had been suffering a slight illness for the past three days, but his condition, despite his advanced years, had not been considered serious. The end came shortly after he had finished his morning meal, when he was stricken while leaving the breakfast table. The deceased was 91 years, 11 months and 1 day old at the time of his death. He had been a resident of Chico since June 2, 1872, crossing the plains to California in 1850. He reminiscences of early times were the delight of his many friends, his memory remaining undimmed with age, recalling easily and quickly names and places of the thrilling days of the gold rushes. Camper was born in Fincastle, W.Va., (then Virginia) on November 17, 1830. His first stop in California was at Hangtown – now called Placerville. Here he was engaged in making rockers for the miners, working with his two companions who had made the trip across the plains with him, from his home in South Bend, Ind. He had learned the carriage-maker’s trade in South Bend, where the Studebakers, long famous for their buggies and other horse drawn vehicles, had bought out his father’s shop. He returned to South Bend in 1852 by way of Panama, and made another visit home in 1855. This second time he married Miss Eliza S. Garrison, who shared life with him up to six years ago, when she died. Their golden wedding in 1915 was a social event long to be remembered by many Chicoans. The young couple remained in the middle west for several years, but in 1859 Camper brought his wife to California. For a while he engaged in mining at Placerville, later Forbestown and finally settled down at Indiana ranch in Yuba county. There he mined and later farmed. Coming to Chico in 1872, Camper took up his old trade of carriage making, being an expert in the deft work of fitting and polished the fine woods which gave equipages of the time their brilliant finish. He went into partnership with Anthony Canfield and for thirty years the firm of Camper & Canfield conducted a thriving business at the Junction. After selling out the business, Camper took charge of the woodworking department of Leaninger & Herberlie, at Ninth street and Broadway, working every day until 1909, when at the age of 80 years he retired. The deceased heard some of the old famous debates between Lincoln and Douglas, and delighted in telling his friends how “Honest Abe” was able to get the better of his brilliant adversary. He always took an active interest in civic affairs in Chico, and served as a city trustee in early days. He had been a member of the Odd Fellows for over sixty years, and had taken the degree work. He leaves to mourn his loss, six of his eight children; Mrs. George L. Hazzard, of Whittier; Mrs. W. J. Costar of Chico; Mrs. Theodore Schwein, of Chico; Mrs. Gertrude Merryman, of Chico; D.R. Camper of Chico, and C.W. Camper, of Oroville, and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services will be private at the family home, 4742 Fifth street, at 10 o’clock Friday morning. Arrangements are in charge of the Westfall funeral parlors and services will be conducted by the Christian Science church. Interment will be in Chico cemetery. ~~~ 91-year-old Henry Wax Camper was interred, per the Chico Cemetery Association Records, in the plot noted, on October 20, 1922. ~~~ Chico Record, Saturday, October 21, 1922, pg 8 col 3: Funeral Services for the Late H.W. Camper Held. The remains of the late H.W. Camper were laid to rest in the Chico cemetery yesterday morning following the funeral services, which were conducted from the family home 4742 Fifth street, at 10 o’clock. The Christian Scientist services, which were private, being attended only by the immediate members and friends of the family, were conducted by Mrs. Cora Helms of Oakland. Many beautiful flowers and floral offerings were sent by the many friends of the late pioneer. The services were in charge of Westfall undertaking parlors. Those who acted as pall bearers were: Thomas N. Crew, George Vadney, D.W. Cooper, Dr. W.W. Head, A.L. Neubarth and Jesse Nelson.
