Bennyworth, in the thirty-fifth years of his age. On Wednesday afternoon at one o'clock the funeral sermon of Martin D. Bennyworth was conducted in the Methodist church, of which he was a member, by Rev. R. A. Carmine, who chose for his theme the "Ministry of Suffering." M. D. Bennyworth was a man well known in this part of the country, having been a resident of Larned about twelve years, removing from Virden, Illinois, to this place with his family in 1876. That dread disease, consumption, from which there seems to be no escape, placed its seal upon his several years ago, since when he was almost a constant sufferer. During his last sickness kind friends and loving, gentle hands did everything possible to make the close of his life's drama peaceful and quiet. Surrounded by his wife and children, his aged father and mother, and a number of devoted friends and relatives, and fortified by the glorious hope of a life everlasting which comes to the soul washed and purified in the blood of the lamb, his tired spirit forsook its mortal tenament and pinioned its flight for that unseen world whose deep and solemn mystery can only be penetrated by death. The body of the deceased was enclosed in a handsome black velvet casket, upon the top of which was a fine engraved plate "at rest." Among the beautiful floral tributes was a handsome piece arranged by Mr. Jackson and tendered by Hon. Nelson Adams, representing "Gates Ajar." It was composed of white hyacinths and lilies of the valley on a dark ground of green leaves, a half-blown tea rose hanging just over the entrance of the gates. His name in white flowers on a dark ground laid on the coffin with the other flowers during the service, as did also a beautiful cross in colored flowers. Messrs. Nelson Adams, A. P. Cook, W. M. Dumont, F. D. Lowrey, H. H. Reed and P. H. Forbes were the pall-bearers. M. D. Bennyworth was a man of noble, generous instincts. Impulsive and steadfast in his friendship, he never hesitated to sacrifice himself to promote the interests of those whom he counted as his friends. Big-hearted and unselfish, he was always ready to extend a helping hand to those in need. His earthly career is full of many good deeds and generous acts, the memory of which will continue to live in the minds of those who knew him best and loved him most. After life's fitful fever he sleeps well. He has solved the awful mystery that separates the living from the dead. His rest is unbroken in that gloom that knows no waking, or his feet have pressed the golden shore of eternal peace and happiness. We know not - we cannot penetrate beyond the grave. The bounds of all human knowledge and rational reasoning is circumscribed this side of the vale which shuts us off from those who have gone before. We only know that Mart was kind and generous, big-hearted and unselfish, and in memory's golden casket we drop a silent tear and breathe the hope that all is well.
