The body was placed in the receiving vault at Riverside until road conditions improve, when burial will be in the Timber Creek cemetery. – Times Republican, Marshalltown, IA – March 28, 1929 Mrs. Mary Van Allen one of the early residents of Ferguson, died at the soldiers home hospital at 5 o'clock Monday afternoon of heart trouble. She had been in the hospital since last September. Mrs. Van Allen was born Miss Mary Akins, daughter of William and Polly (Susannah) Adkins and she would have been 91 years old had she lived until next September. She was born in Monroe county, Indiana, September 28, 1838, the youngest of six children and the last of them to die. She came to Marshall county in the spring of 1851 when there were only three houses in Marshalltown. She settled with her parents in a hastily improvised log cabin in the vicinity of Ferguson and had spent the greater part of her life in that town where she had many friends. She was first married to David Lacey, September 10, 1956, and he later served in the union army in the civil war, dying January 13, 1863. There were two children born to this union , Sara Ann Lacey, who died September 18, 1862, and Ida Alice Lacey, now Mrs. Ida Hoight, of Johnston Florida. On September 15, 1864, Mary Lacey married to Miles Brush, also a civil war veteran, who died March 8, 1870. Three children were born to this union all of whom are living; D.E. Brush, Ferguson; Solomon L. Brush, Worthington, MN; and Mrs. Evelyn Squires, Bellflower, California. Her third husband was John Van Allen, to whom she was married August 11, 1871. He also was a civil war veteran and died in 1905. Two children were born to this union. Lenard J. Van Allen, who died December 9, 1897 and is survived by a daughter, now Mrs. M. L. Price of this city, and Mr. Mary Elizabeth Craig, who died July 2, 1901. Sixteen grandchildren and a large number of great grandchildren survive her. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from Pursel's funeral home in charge of Rev. F. M. Wheeler. Burial will be in Timber Creek cemetery. – Times Republican, Marshalltown, IA – March 26, 1929. Mary's mother was Susannah "Polly" Brush who died in the Marshalltown, Iowa area between 1850 and 1870. Her whereabouts are unknown at this time.
