Mrs. M. L. Harr died Tuesday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.L. Ransdell, in Topeka. She would have been 89 years old in December. Mrs. Harr home had been in Emporia for more than 30 years, until a few months ago. She lived for many years at 1514 Highland. The body will be brought to Emporia. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Mrs. Harr was the first white girl born in Shawnee county, and at the time of her death was believed to be the oldest native-born Kansas living in the state. As a child of 10, she carried the news of the assassination of President Lincoln from the Waveland post office, four miles east of Auburn, where she lived with an aunt, to the home of their nearest neighbor, who spread the sad tidings in that section. Waveland was only a post office and stage station, between Burlingame and Topeka, but mail was delivered there every day. Mrs. Harr's aunt, Mrs. Robert Todd, was postmistress, and was the first to receive the news. She immediately started her niece to the neighor's home, perhaps a mile distant. Mrs. Harr, whose maiden name was Mary Alice Cook, was born December 22, 1854. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Lindsley Cook, and they had a claim near Waveland. Her father was a Kentuckian; her mother was a native of Virginia. Her mother died when she was 14 months old, her father later, and her home from the time of her mother's death until she was 13 years old was with her mother's sister, Mrs. Todd. From the age of 13 until her marriage she lived with her grandmother at Lee's Summit, Mo., and there in 1878, she was married to Mathias Lloyd Harr. Mr. and Mrs. Harr lived on a farm near Auburn, later moved to Topeka, and in 1910 the family came to Emporia. Mr. Harr died here in 1926. Surviving Mrs. Harr are seven children: Mrs. Harry Morgan, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Miss Winifred Harr, San Francisco, Calif.; Mrs. C.L. Ransdell ad Mrs. Elsie Harrison, Topeka; Mrs. Charles Tefft, Pomona; V.C. Harr and L.T. Harr, Emporia. Twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Harr was a member of the First Methodist church and formerly took an active part in the work of the women's organizations and Sunday school. Other Emporia organizations in which she had held membership include the Women's City club, the Ladies of the G.A.R. and the W.C.T.U. *********************************** Emporia Gazette, Saturday, Novemeber 13, 1943; p. 2, c. 4 Services for Mrs. M. L. Harr Funeral services were held Friday afternoon in the First Methodist church for Mrs. M.L. Harr, long time resident of Emporia who died Tuesday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. C.L. Runsdell , in Topeka. The Rev. Hugh B. Fouke, pastor f the church, conducted the services, and Mrs. Orville Borchers sang accompanied by Miss Connie Brown. The pallbearers were V.M. Sheeley, Harry D. McKee, Barclay Bond, Conrad Vandervelde, Ralph G. Parker and Harry A. Wayman. Burial was in Maplewood cemetery. Out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral were Mrs. Elsie Harrison and Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Runsdell, Topeka; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Runsdell and sons, Jimmie and Chad, Wichita; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Tefft and daughters, Virginia and Mary Lynn, Pomona; Mrs. Marion Rollman and Mrs. Blanche Butler, Topeka.
