Inurnment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Pierre. Mary Alice Kelley was born Jan. 5, 1924, in Hand County, S.D., to James W. Kelley and Viola Smith Kelley. Her father farmed; her mother taught country school, and Mary was the third of six children. She attended grade school in country schools, then later, graduated from Miller High School, and attended College in Tracy, Minn. In 1942, she moved with her family, from Miller to Rapid City, then to Pierre. During World War II, she lived and worked for the Bureau of Ships, in Washington, D.C. In April of 1947, she was united in marriage to Leo Kellar and to this union, five sons were born. From 1970 to 1985, Mary was employed by the S.D. Bureau of Personnel. She and Leo retired in 1985 and enjoyed their retirement together. They loved to camp and travel; they did volunteer work, and visited their sons and grandchildren together until Leo died in 1997. In 2000, Mary moved to Sioux Falls to be close to her sons and their families. She lived at the independent living center at Prince of Peace until 2005 when she moved into the assisted living center. She enjoyed her life in that small community, and her willingness to help others and her strong sense of humor made her a favorite among staff and tenants. Mary was a dedicated volunteer for years, both in Pierre and Sioux Falls, and belonged to many organizations. Some are: S.D. Democratic Party (life-long supporter), S.D. Volunteer Leaders, Oahe Toast-mistresses (charter member), Missouri Shores (board member), VFW Auxiliary, Easter Seals Personnel Representative, Ss. Peter and Paul Council, and Catholic Daughters, St. Joseph School, Prince of Peace Council Member, lector for daily mass, library volunteer and many others. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, son Mark, brothers Kenneth, Joseph, and Tom, sisters Katy Owens and Jody Deetz, and her husband of 50 years, Leo. She is survived by her sons, James, Edward, Patrick, and William, 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
