Information provided by Linda Stockdale lists the following reasons for believing that Katherine Rooks is not the mother of Mary Ann Cherry Wheatley: "1. Mrs. Esther Garner Brewer whose mother was Jeanette Louise Bullock Garner, said "Mary Cherry Wheatley and Granny Cherry had known of each other in NC no doubt, and were related some way." I remember at the time Mrs. Esther made that statement, there were a couple of genealogists around that really pressed her to say Mary was Katherine Cherry's daughter, and that may have been how that whole scenario started. 2. In Benton County, 1846, Katherine Cherry gave a sworn statement before David Benton in support of the widow's pension application of Peggy Wheatley, widow of Alexander. Katherine gave very detailed comments about her age and those of her children. She referred to her youngest son Henry Cherry, her daughter Milia and her oldest son that she referred to as Lamb Cherry. Surely if Mary had been her daughter, she would have also mentioned her. 3. Mary Cherry Wheatley was born in 1811, as per her tombstone. If Katherine Cherry was born in 1758, she would have been 53 years old when Mary was born. If Katherine was born in 1763, which is about the time she said she was born in the above sworn statement, she would have been 48 years old when Mary was born." Also, "There was a letter dated in 1982 from Mavis Jones to Jonathan K.T. Smith wherein she said that Mrs. Esther said she was told by her mother that Katherine Cherry's maiden name was Rooks and that she, along with John and Milly Nobles, are buried in Forrest Cemetery, now called Nobles Cemetery. So I think we are very safe in saying those things are accurate." If anyone has further information on the parentage of Mary Ann Cherry, please contact myself or Linda Stockdale who has done extensive research on the Wheatley and Cherry lines. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I was taken to this cemetery by Mary Lillian Daniel Henderson, one of the many great grandchildren of William W. Wheatley and his wife Mary Ann Cherry. I walked the stones of this, and many other burial sites around Big Sandy meeting grandma's family and do swear that Mary Ann Cherry Wheatley lies next to her husband in the Wheatley Cemetery. Although some people tend to believe this Mary Ann Cherry Wheatley was one and the same with the Mary Wheatley (daughter of Charles Judkins Wheatley) who remains are in the Old Forrest Cemetery, they were two separate people. My previous biographical information for Mary Ann Cherry Wheatley had displayed as a cenotaph. Due to opinions from others and a modern stone placed as a memorial at Old Forrest Cemetery/Nobles Cemetery I was swayed to change my memorial so as not to create striff. I should not have done so due to the the slim information listed on the TVA rolls which only listed the name "Mary Wheatley" as being buried at the Old Forrest Cemetery. There is no original source which lists the full name of Mary Cherry Wheatley or even Mary Ann Wheatley as being buried at the Old Forrest Cemetery. There are numerous sources, including family bibles and family recollections, which state the body buried next to William W. Wheatley, and which was marked with head and footstone, just like her husband, were that of Mary Ann Cherry Wheatley. Therefore, I return this memorial back to a true burial memorial. If anyone wishes to provide details for this memorial, please use the Find A Grave provided tools to do so. If anyone wishes to debate the burial location of this, or any other of those buried in the Old Forrest Cemetery/Nobles Cemetery, Wheatley Cemetery or the other cemeteries affected by the TVA Cemetery Relocation, please refer to the information below and then feel free to contact me by email. Wheatley Cemetery holds cenotaph markers for individuals whose graves were left unreachable due to TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) major works projects to allow for hydroelectric power by damming the Tennessee River at multiple locations. According to the TVA's Cemetery Relocation Database only 20,000 graves were relocated out of the 69,000 graves that were investigated as being affected. This creates confusion in some instances where remembrance stones, or cenotaphs, were placed after the fact perhaps to keep the family member from being forgotten.
