Wheatley was born in the year of our Lord 1805 the 9th Day of August." William W. Wheatley was mentioned in "Historic Benton: A Peoples History of Benton County, TN (Smith)" under the section of "Earliest Settlers, Areas of Sulpher and Harmons Creek, page 47". This source, along with additional documents, record William W. Wheatley's arrival to the Sulpher Creek area in what would be named Benton County, Tennessee as occurring in 1820 (Benton County was not created until 1835 formed from a portion of Humphreys County, Tennessee). He had traveled with other family members by wagon from Martin County, North Carolina, having previously been a resident of that state. Once settled, William W. Wheatley continued to farm the land and by the 1860 Census of the United States for District 7, Benton County, Tennessee had a real estate valuation of $4,000. Quite a substantial amount for that time. According to the record on page 47 in "Historic Benton: A Peoples History..." prior to the Civil War, William Wheatley's crop primarily consisted of tobacco, but later he included wheat, cotton and Indian corn. William W. Wheatley lost his first wife, Mary Ann (Cherry), daughter of Jonathan and Katherine (Rooks) Cherry, on March 5, 1863 with whom he had married about 1829 and fathered ten children. On December 10, 1864 he remarried to Martha A. Hall with whom there were no children. William W. Wheatley's illness and eventual death was documented in the "Camden Herald" and reprinted in "Selective Gleanings From Camden, TN Newspapers 1882-1932" (Smith), as follows: January 30, 1885 - "'Uncle Billy' Wheatley aged about eighty years, and one among the first settlers of this county, is now very low with rheumatism." May 8, 1885 - "Died, William Wheatley, abt. 70, April 24, district 7; an 'old landmark'." Children of William W.
