Mrs. Mary Payer was born March 25, 1831, in Bohemia, Europe, and came to this country with her parents when a young lady in the year of 1853, locating in Hamilton, Canada. Read More	“The Pocahontas Record” Pocahontas, Iowa March 23, 1905. “Obituary” “On Monday there passed to her reward one of Pocahontas county’s earliest settlers, Mrs. Mary Payor, an old and respected resident of this city, after a long illness. Mrs. Mary Payer was born March 25, 1831, in Bohemia, Europe, and came to this country with her parents when a young lady in the year of 1853, locating in Hamilton, Canada. From here her folks moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and thence to Dubuque, Iowa, where she was married to Onfried Brodsky, the late father of L. Brodsky of this place. The husband died in a few years after their marriage and after a year, Mrs. Brodsky removed to Spillville, Iowa, where her parents were living at that time. At this place she was married to Vit Payer, this union being blessed with six children, two of them dying in infancy. In the year 1870, with her husband and children, L. Brodsky, Frank J., Jacob, Anna and Joseph Payer, she came to Pocahontas, at that time opening a general merchandise store which was conducted for three years. After three years they moved to a farm adjoining the town where her husband died in the year 1880. She continued to conduct the farm with the help of her sons until 1904, moving to Pocahontas where she has since made her home. Mrs. Payer was a good woman, a kind and loving mother and a faithful christian in the Catholic faith. The funeral was held at Sacred Heart church, Wednesday forenoon, the service being conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. A. Pape, and the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery. Many old friends and neighbors attended the services which showed the esteem in which the deceased was held during her life time.” Contributed by Ann Bowler, #46893124
