Born September 20, 1911, in Clearwater, Nebraska, Mary was the second of eleven children born to Henry and Anna Venteicher. She was just four months short of reaching 102 years of age. Three of her siblings are still living in Nebraska, Deloris, Agatha and Leo. Born September 20, 1911, in Clearwater, Nebraska, Mary was the second of eleven children born to Henry and Anna Venteicher. She was just four months short of reaching 102 years of age. Three of her siblings are still living in Nebraska, Deloris, Agatha and Leo. Mary grew up during hard times in Nebraska farm country with children being born frequently and transportation being horseback or walking. Mary finished the eighth grade. It always seemed that she was needed at a neighbors house to tend their sick children or working in the kitchen with her mother at a very young age, preparing food for the farm crews and their own family. Mary was married to Joe Goedde September 7, 1932, during the height of the great depression, living in various towns while Joe sought employment. They also began their family, firstborn was Jerry, then Ken and Jim, all were born at home. In the summer of 1940, Joe and his two brothers, Herb and Ivo, came to Chelan to settle the estate of brother Leo, who had drowned in the lake. Joe was offered the job that had been vacated by the death of his brother, at the Ford garage. He then wrote to Mary and told her they were moving to Washington. "The weather is better and there are no flies." Being the good wife, she pretty well had everything packed and ready for the trip. That trip consisted of their 1935 Dodge and a two wheeled trailer loaded to the gills, including the wash tub. The back seat was loaded with belongings stacked as high as the front seat, a dog and three kids. What a trip that was! In 1940, Pearl Harbor was bombed making fuel almost impossible to get, therefore, Mary was unable to return to her family in Nebraska for five years. After vacationing in Nebraska, she realized that Chelan was truly her home. In 1941, boy number 4 (Leo) was born. When the boys were growing up, there was always an extra plate on the table for their friends. She never knew who or how many there'd be for dinner. We never could figure out where all the food came from.... Joe worked for the school as transportation superintendent and bus mechanic and Mary worked for many years in the orchards and warehouses, 38 years sorting apples at Stadlemans and North Country. The warehouse was located where Bayshore Court now stands. She also laundered all the towels for the school sports programs and PE classes. No automatic dryers at the time, everything was line dried...she earned her money on that job, she was paid maybe 5 cents per towel. In their retirement years, they traveled to Quartzsite, Arizona for several years, making many friends there. They moved to Heritage Heights Assisted Living in 1998 due to Joe's failing health, he passed in 2001. Mary stayed on until early 2013, establishing many committees, and serving as chairman on most of them. Her health began to fail in February, 2013, so she moved to Regency Manor, where she passed away of May 31, 2013. Mary was a devout Catholic all her life and prayed the Rosary daily. In the family's early days in Chelan, the church was a mission from Wenatchee. Mary did most of the laundry for the church and usually fed the visiting priest breakfast before his long journey back to Wenatchee. She was always "on call" to help whenever needed. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers and sisters and her husband Joe Goedde. Mary is survived by four sons, Jerry, Ken, Jim and Leo; eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, June 7, 2013 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Chelan. Interment will follow the Mass at the Chelan Fraternal Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Francis de Sales Church or St. Francis Ladies Guild, in memory of Mary Goedde.
