No headstone is in place for her, nor any inscription, on this Coppock family plot. ------------ The Fairfield (Iowa) Daily Ledger Thursday, January 29, 1931 Pg. 2 Col. 5&6 OBITUARY Mrs. Thomas COPPOCK Mary Catharine (sic. a/k/a Catherine) RUBEY, daughter of Elias and Catharine (sic. Catherine on her headstone) RUBEY was born on a farm in Lee county, Iowa, October 28, 1854 and was one of a large family, 9 of whom grew to manhood and womanhood, 5 boys and 4 girls. When just a small child, her parents moved to Cincinatti, Appanoose County, Iowa and a few years later the father purchased (sic. a) farm northeast of Salina, Jefferson county, Iowa, to which he moved his family just before the Civil War, and which has since been known as the RUBEY Homestead. This farm still remains in the RUBEY family, Charles RUBEY a grandson now lives on the place. When a young woman Mrs. COPPOCK came to Fairfield and for over 20 years lived with and cared for Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin PIERCE, who was an author of a number of religious books. Mrs. COPPOCK did much of his manuscript copying work for him with pen and ink. Their tribute to her was that she had been as a daughter to them, and tried in a measure to repay her kindness by making her beneficiary of Mr. PIERCE's death. After the death of Mr. (sic. typo - "Mrs.") PIERCE, she was united to Thomas COPPOCK of Coppock, Iowa, a Civil War veteran, on December 30, 1891, making their home in Fairfield until death, Mr. COPPOCK passing away on October 28, 1926 (sic. October 27, 1926), and Mrs. COPPOCK passed away at 4:30 p.m. Sunday January 25, 1931, at the Memorial hospital, Fairfield, at the age of 76 years 2 months and 27 days. To this union were born one daughter, Olive of Fairfield,, and one son Orion (sic. a/k/a Owen), a practicing physcian and surgeon of Chicago, Illinois. Olive lived and cared for her mother in her declinging (sic.) years and last illness, as only a loving daughter can. She also leaves five step children, Laura CLUTTER and Hulda BRADFIELD of Salem, Oregon and Edith McCLAIN and Sadie SENCE of Demver. Colo., and Lela (sic. Lelia) WHEELER of Fairfield, and two brothers, George RUBEY (George W Rubey ) of Cedar Rapids and Hiarm (sic. Hiram) RUBEY of Morrisville, Mo. and one sister, Mrs. Zelia IGOE (sic. spelling) of Creston. Ten grandchildren and many relatives mourn her demise. Her son Orion from Chicago and her sister from Creston arrived at her bedside just a few hours before her death and they with the daughter Olive remained at her bedside until the end. Mrs. COPPOCK was one of the pioneer members of the Church of God at Lower Richwood, north of Salina and had lived always exemplifying the Christian life by her ministrations to humanity in caring for those sick or afflicted and extending comfort and cheer to those in distress. A mother whose first and last thought was that of her children and home a wife and mother who felt that a woman's duty was to be a cheer and comfort to her husband children and of as God had designed it should be. The brothers and sisters who preceded her in death were William, Elias, and Henry RUBEY, Mrs. J.V. HOOKISON and Mrs. John N. COREY ( Sarah C Rubey Corey). Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Campbell funeral home conducted by the Rev. Mendenhall an old friend of the family who spoke from the words in Psalm 39-4 "Lord make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days what it is; that I may know how frail I am." Mrs. Cora Ball sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul," and "Rock of Ages." A short service was held at the grave in Evergreen cemetery where the body was laid to rest. Those attending the funeral from a distance werre Mr. and Mrs. Charles HEFLIN of Creston, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. COREY, Mr. and Mrs. W. S. COREY, Mr. and Mrs. Elwyn COREY, E. H. RUBEY and family and Mr. and Mrs. ANDERSON of Mt. Union, and John COREY of Morning Sun. ---------- Note: For a total of about twenty years Mary cared for and helped Benjamin D Pierce and his wife Rachel Coppock Pierce . After Rachel died in 1890 it appears that Mary was given much of Rachel's medical books and instruments. Mary continued to care for and help copy by pen and ink the many manuscripts that Benjamin D Pierce wrote. In 1890 Benjamin had two homes built on south Main street in Fairfield - he lived in one and Mary lived in the other. Mary married Thomas Silas Coppock in 1891 and they lived in the 305 South Main home, having two children born to them. While Benjamin still owned his adjacent home, he died in the Coppock home (likely being taken care of by Mary). Over time both homes were lived in either by Coppock descendants or possibly a brother of Benjamin. ---------- A son of Thomas Silas Coppock and Mary Catharine Rubey Coppock was Dr. Orion (sic. a/k/a Owen) Otto Coppock, born Dec. 21, 1895 and died May 6, 1980 in Oak Lawn, Cook county, Illinois. He was married to a Bessie Erwin Coppock. Presumably he (and she) were buried in a cemetery in the Oak Lawn area, but this contributor has not determined that cemetery at this time.
