Lacking but a short period of arriving at her eighty-fifth birthday, Mrs. Mary Charlotte [Sayles] Fetterman died Wednesday morning, November 21, 1917, at the home of her son, J. C. [John Cassius] Fetterman, at Paola, Kansas, to which place she had gone just a week before from her home west of this city, to spend the winter. Though enjoying unusually good health for one of her advanced years, and appearing to stand the trip well, on which she was accompanied by her niece, Miss Hattie Sayles, the change in surroundings seemed to have an effect and brought a physical collapse, from which she was unable to rally and her life went out in peaceful sleep. . Mary Charlotte Sayles was born at Lake Cazenovia, New York, on December 24, 1832. Her father was a member of the pioneer Sayles family of Rhode Island. At the age of four years she was taken by her parents from New York to the then unsettled wilderness of Holmes county, Ohio, where she grew to young womanhood and became a school teacher. Her whole life was one of splendid self sacrifice, as a [??] mother, twice a pioneer in newly settled countries, and for three years keeping her lonely vigil in her little Ohio home with two small children while she sent her husband away to war as a soldier in the Forty-second Ohio Volunteer Infantry. On January 1, 1857, she wedded Jesse Fetterman, who also, after his service in the Civil war, became a pioneer, bringing his family to a homestead on the wild and unsettled prairies of the territory of Dakota, just across the state border line from where Akron, Iowa, has since been built. Here for over forty-eight years she resided upon the old homestead, meeting the problems and enduring the privations of the early days of this region, but being privileged to live to enjoy so many of the fruits of the early sacrifices. She was not only a devoted wife and mother, but an ever kind and helpful friend and neighbor, and no where did the spirit of true hospitality abound more freely than in the Fetterman home. . Mrs. [Charlotte Sayles] Fetterman was the mother of three sons -- Clarence W. Fetterman, the eldest, who has resided with her upon her farm since the death of her husband [Jesse Fetterman] twenty-eight years ago; J.C., the second son, who has been for several years joint agent of the Frisco and Katy railway lines at Paola, Kansas; Albert D., the third, who is a lawyer and ranchman in Grant county, Nebraska, at Hyannis, where he is also county attorney. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Rowena [Sayles] Voorus, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Mrs. Hattie [Sayles] Morey, of Syracuse, New York. . Brief funeral services were held at the Fetterman home in Paola last Thursday afternoon, Rev. O.B. Thurston officiating, after which the body, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Fetterman and A.D. [Albert] Fetterman, was brought back to Akron [Iowa] for burial beside her husband in the Riverside cemetery. The funeral services here were conducted by Rev. W.W. Tyrrell in the M.E. church Saturday afternoon, where a large number of old-time friends assembled to pay a last tribute of respect. The members of Vesper chapter, O.E.S., of which order the deceased was a member, attended the service in a body and conducted the beautiful and impressive Eastern Star burial service at the grave.
