December 27, 1917 - Carroll Times - Mrs. James Jackson passed away at her home Monday morning, December 24, after an illness since Thanksgiving with an attack of heart trouble. Read More	Mary was the daughter of Reuben Spoyd and Mary Hart, She married Elihu Hillis on April 28, 1863 in Illinois. She married James Jackson on April 28, 1897 in Carroll, IA. December 27, 1917 - Carroll Times - Mrs. James Jackson passed away at her home Monday morning, December 24, after an illness since Thanksgiving with an attack of heart trouble. The funeral will be held from the home at 2:30 this afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. Burton Sheppard. Mrs. Jackson was a cheerful, happy woman, who had hosts of friends in the city although she was practically an invalid for the past fifteen years because of a weak heart. She united with the Methodist church in Carroll some twenty-five years ago and while her condition kept her from services at the church for many years, her heart was always with the church and its work and she was especially interested in the work for the orphan's home. Having no children of her own it was a great delight to her to give little children happy surprises. Mrs. Jackson, nee Mary Spoyd, was born in Ohio, June 23, 1843 and was married April 28, 1863, to E. Hillis, in Illinois. They lived in that state some years, moving to Carroll county in the spring of 1872 and settling on a farm near Halbur, where they lived until 1887 when they moved to Carroll to the present home, and where Mr. Hillis died in 1888. On April 28, 1897, Mrs. Hillis was united in marriage to James Jackson. After their marriage they lived for 5 years on a farm in Sac County but both being in poor health they moved to Carroll and have since lived a retired life. Mrs. Jackson is survived by her husband, one sister, Mrs. Taylor Guy of this city, and two sisters and one brother in Ohio.
