Description	:	Mary Sanderson, 88, of Winner, S.D., passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008 at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center Long Term Care Facility. Mary Sanderson was born September 9, 1920 in Medicine Hat, Alberta Canada to Cornelius and Jean (Murray) Johnson. She lived on the family farm near Whitla, Alberta, beginning first grade in rural Canada. Read More	Mary Sanderson, 88, of Winner, S.D., passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008 at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center Long Term Care Facility. Mary Sanderson was born September 9, 1920 in Medicine Hat, Alberta Canada to Cornelius and Jean (Murray) Johnson. She lived on the family farm near Whitla, Alberta, beginning first grade in rural Canada. In 1926, she moved with her family to Rushville where she continued her education until graduating from high school. Mary then attended college in Chadron earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics, and ultimately earning advanced college credits in Greeley, Colo.; Brookings, and Spearfish, S.D. She was able to teach Home Economics for a total of 25 years beginning at Keya Paha County High, Springview, where she met her husband to be, Dale Sanderson. They were united in marriage on February 18, 1946 and moved to Rushville where Mary continued teaching until 1952. At this time, their now family of three, including daughter Judy moved to Winner, S.D. Mary completed her teaching career at Winner High School, before retiring in 1986. Mary was a member of Order of Eastern Star, and past Worthy Matron; a member of Chapter AM, P.E.O. and past president, as well as Girl Scout Leader, guardian of Job's Daughters, and many years as an FHA sponsor. Mary spent many years in what she always described as rewarding years working with youth. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Judy and Jim Nicolaisen of Carter, S.D.; granddaughter and husband Stacy & Kevin Kersten of Gretna; grandson and wife; Schuyler and Tonya Nicolaisen of Phoenix, Ariz.; great-granddaughters: Stephanie & Korie Kersten; Shae & Shelby Nicolaisen; three brothers: Murray Johnson of Devils Lake, N.D.; Bennett Johnson of Rapid City, S.D.; Stuart Johnson of Rushville; one sister: Evaline Norman of Crawford; many nieces, nephews and numerous friends. Mary was preceded in death by her husband; Dale; great-granddaughter: Megan; parents: Cornelius and Jean Johnson; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and two nephews Gary and Ben Norman. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 22 at 11:00 a.m. at the Carter Gospel Fellowship Church in Carter. Burial will be in the Winner Cemetery.
