She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mildred Lauer, her husband Clyde Catching and her daughter Paula Catching Briggs. She is survived by her brother, Eugene Lauer, her sister, Maude Stillwell, and her four sons, Peter, Mark, Terry and Benjamin, nine grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mildred Lauer, her husband Clyde Catching and her daughter Paula Catching Briggs. She is survived by her brother, Eugene Lauer, her sister, Maude Stillwell, and her four sons, Peter, Mark, Terry and Benjamin, nine grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. Mary, Mom, Grandma was a life long resident of Red Bluff, leaving only to attend Chico State College during the war years, and a brief time working in Paradise, California, and a half year in Lubbock, Texas. She loved the old family place on Live Oak Road which was established by her paternal grandfather in the 1880's. She and Clyde built a new home there and moved onto their share in 1957. Mary taught kindergarten and first grade at Lincoln Street and at Jackson Heights schools. Many local people over the years have expressed fond memories of 'Mrs. Catching' as their kindergarten or first grade teacher. She retired from teaching in 1970 and began spending more time with family and friends, reading, gardening, genealogy, and quilting commemorating grandchildren's graduations. She was a member of the Baptist church where she sang duets with Faith Bennett and sometimes trios with Faith and her mother. She was a faithful Christian who read the bible every morning. Mary loved the changing of the seasons and all the natural wonders found in northern California. She loved family outings to the coast, or Mt Lassen, and especially to the old family mountain cabin on Maple Creek on Tomhead Mountain. She was an excellent piano player and had a beautiful singing voice. She fostered music, arts, and scholarship in her children. The Catching home at Red Hill was often host to big gatherings: great food, homemade ice cream, and homemade music contributed by friends and family. She died of natural causes resulting from aging. She will be missed, but her spirit and her way of enjoying the earth and friends and family will not be forgotten. Published in Daily News on Apr. 12, 2018
