Eastwood, of... Read More	Obituary GRANDMA EASTWOOD PASSES AWAY The funeral of Mrs. Mary L. Eastwood, widow of the late Henry H. Eastwood, was held at the United Presbyterian Church on Mission Creek last Thursday afternoon, and interment was made in the Mission Creek Cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. J. B. Story. At the time of her death Mrs. Eastwood was the oldest resident of the Mission Creek community. The large attendance at the funeral bore eloquent testimony to the esteem in which Grandma Eastwood was held by those who knew her. The following obituary was prepared by her son, James A. Eastwood, of Baldwin Kansas: Mary Lucas Kirkendall was born at Wiota, Wis., Oct. 5th, 1843. Her first husband, William Burritt, died in April, 1865. She was married to Henry Houtz Eastwood, Aug. 27th 1867. She was the mother of eleven children, George, who died in infancy, Mrs. Lucy Blume, whose death occurred last November, Mrs F. Kent, Falls City, Mrs. Mamie Black, Joseph and Otis Eastwood of Mission Creek, Robert and Harvey of Moran Kansas, Austin of Montour Falls, N.Y., Fred of Gillette, Wyoming, and James A. of Baldwin, Kansas. The deceased is survived by four sisters and two brothers. Grandma Eastwood had forty-three grandchildren and forty-four great-grandchildren. In 1878 the family moved to Nebraska and settled on Mission Creek where Mrs. Eastwood resided during the half-century period and confessed her faith in Christ at the age of eleven years. She became a member of the United Presbyterian Church at Mission Creek by letter, Dec 31st, 1893. Her husband, Henry Houtz Eastwood, died Nov 4th, 1913, since which time she, with her daughter, Mrs. Mamie Black has lived in the old house. Several Months ago, Grandma Eastwood was stricken with a fatal malady, and on July 24, 1928, as the rays of the morning sun began to flood the landscape, her spirit left its tenement of clay for the realm celestial. Undismayed and unafraid she approached death. Her confidence was that of the poet, who wrote: So shall it be at last in that bright morning, when the soul awaketh and life's shadows flee, O, in that hour, fairer than daylight dawning, Shall rise the glorious thought--I am with thee. In preparing this obituary the writer is entirely incapable of finding words to adequately appraise his mother's life and character. We would, if we could, tell of her life of devotion to duty and service to others. Even to her very latest hours her chief concern seemed to be the welfare of those about her. While ever ready for death, she never lost interest in the affairs of life. Until a few weeks before her passing she wrote letters to her children who lived at a distance, telling them how she rejoiced in having her friends and relatives come to see her, and frequently spoke of the joy and help she derived from the visits of her pastor and wife. We would tell of her great love of children. They were her delight and during her last illness continually made inquiries about her acquaintances. Frequently she would awaken from a dream in which she said she had heard the voices of children. I believe that our dear mother's spirit has entered heavenly portals, and that her voice is blending with all those whose faithfulness has enabled them to gain an entrance into the joys of the Lord. I am sitting by your bedside--Mother, As your life slowly ebbs away, I ponder the years you have been with us And the life you have lived day by day. Parience beyond all human knowing, Love that is all but divine, Courage no warrior has equaled In all the annals of time.
