She died April 3, 2004 at the Ashley Nursing Home. Mary Steinwandt, daughter of Jakob and Katherina (Engel) Steinwandt was born Dec. 6, 1906 in Beresina Township in McIntosh County, ND. This is where she grew up and attended country school. She helped on the family farm. She was united in marriage to J.F. Schneider on April 4, 1926 at Zion II Lutheran Church, rural Ashley. They lived and farmed 20 miles northeast of Ashley until 1984 when the retired and moved into Ashley. Mary was always happiest when she was able to be with others. She was a wonderful cook with the gift of hospitality. Embroidery was a favorite past time for her in her elder years. She also loved singing with friends. She was a former member of Zion II Lutheran Church and a current member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley. Survivors include three sisters-in-law, Esther Steinwandt, Marie Schneider and Mary Steinwandt, a brother-in-law, Johnie Schneider and nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband, one infant son, three brothers, two sisters and Hugo Kruger, who lived with them for 40 years, preceded her in death. Casket bearers will be Marvin Schneider, Matt Schock, Marvin Hoffman and Edwin Heinrich, all of Ashley, Terry Weszner of Bismarck and Wilfred Henke of Streeter. The organist will be Steve Glaesmann and special music will be performed by the Zion Lutheran Church Choir. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with the arrangements.
