Mary Jane was a highly accomplished faculty member and professor at the University of Michigan, where she is recognized for her work as Professor Emeritus of Education. Her path began in her hometown of Norfolk, NE where she was raised on her grandparents' farm near Pierce, NE along with her older brother, "Bob". Jane had a passion for learning and earned her a B.A. in Education from Iowa State College in 1949 and worked as a preschool teacher at Stephens College in Columbia, MO. She went on to earn her M.A. in 1951 in Child Development from the University of Iowa where she taught at the Child Welfare Research Station. In an effort to be closer to her brother in Ohio, she moved to Chicago and worked at a local nursery school. She then found her passion for teaching young adults and served from 1954-1956 as a teacher at the University of Michigan's Neuropsychiatric Institute, subsequently earning herself a position at University of Michigan's School of Education. Jane continued her own schooling and received her Ph.D. in 1961 and was consistently promoted from Assistant Professor, to Associate Professor, to Professor in 1970. She retired in 1988 after 31 years of dedicated leadership and service to UM and this year (2010) is being recognized for her 50th anniversary as a UM Rackham graduate. During her tenure at UM, Professor Schwertfeger was predominantly responsible for the growth and development of the early childhood education department. She was known among students and colleagues for her gentle but firm advocacy on behalf of preschool and kindergarten children, specializing in disturbed children. She was a positive influence and inspiration to those who studied in her field. She has scores of publications, several jointly written by her close friends yet today, Anne Hungerman of Ann Arbor, and Patricia O'Connor, of Northport, MI. After retirement she had the opportunity to enjoy more time with her wonderful friends, family, and neighbors at her home on Navarre Circle in Ann Arbor as well as "Up North" at her cottage on Lake Michigan's small town, Northport. The happiest of all, however, were her Labradors (Midnight, Tillie, and Dessie) who had more walks at the beaches, through the dense woods, as well as the tree-lined farms of Apple and Cherry Orchards. She spoke often of her joy at the local parks and beaches, as well as community picnics and events. She truly had a passion for all things "local", including artwork, music, farm raised fruits, wines, vegetables, wild flowers, Lake Michigan sunsets, and most of all, the sweets you'd find at the bakeries in town. She often remarked at how lucky she has been to enjoy all the things and the people she loves. She respected her colleagues, adored her friends and students, loved her family, and appreciated God's beauty in children, nature and animals. Our "Aunt Jane" was extremely kind, compassionate, considerate, generous, and caring. Jane was preceded in death by her parents Max and Gladys (Fricke) of Norfolk, NE, grandparents Louisa (Morris) and Henry Fricke of Norfolk, NE, her brother, Floyd Edward Schwertfeger and sister-in-law Betty Jane Schwertfeger of Rossford, OH, nephew-in-law, Gareth Davies of Collingwood, Ontario and recently departed niece, Louise (Schwertfeger) Jaqua of Toledo, OH. She is survived by her many family members who loved her, including nephew Robert (Anne) Schwertfeger of Ottawa Hills, OH, nieces Betsy Davies of Collingwood, Ontario, Sandra Ansted of Perrysburg, OH and Virginia (Jerry) Steer of Rossford, OH, as well as twelve great-nephews and great-nieces; Craig Jaqua, Melissa Jaqua, Chris Steer, Doreen Schwartz, Michelle Dean, Loraine Bremner, Mannon Schwertfeger, Jeffrey Steer, Jennifer Gogol, Robert Schwertfeger, Todd Ansted, and Ryan Steer and their spouses, children, and extended families. Jane spent the last several years in Sylvania, OH at Kingston Residence and enjoyed being cared for by family and many magnificent caregivers. All who knew and loved her will forever remember Jane for her delicate and compassionate nature. A memorial service will be held Friday, July 9, at the First Presbyterian Church in Ann Arbor located at 1432 Washtenaw Avenue at 10:30 a.m. Parking is located on Forest Avenue. Jane believed in supporting numerous charities, but mostly those, which support vulnerable children and animals. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a consideration of a donation to your favorite children's charity, to your local Humane Society, or to your local Hospice organization. Jane's final resting place will be at Prospect cemetery where she will be with her mother and grandparents in Pierce, NE.
