The Lincoln Star Friday, August 29,1975 Police In Omaha Searching For Hit-Run Death Car Omaha (AP) - Omaha police are seeking a 1972 or newer Chrysler with damage to the right side or front in connection with the death of a 19-year-old Malvern, Iowa, woman. The body of Mary Jo Smith was found Monday in a shallow ditch near the southern edge of Omaha Police said she had been run over by a car and her dragged several feet. Lt. Paul Duff, head of the night homicide unit, said Wednesday the exact model, year and color of the auto are no known. However, he said police will be able to recognize the care if it is repaired. Duff said the investigation is leading police to believe Miss Smith was the victim of a hut-and-run- driver, rather than a deliberate homicide. Duff said a study of the death site, along with the results of an autopsy which showed the cause of death to be from massive hip injuries led to the hit and run theory. The hip injury indicates Miss Smith was probably standing on the side of the road and was hit by the side of the car, rather than head-on since her legs were not broken, Duff said. The auto then apparently made a nearly complete rotation entangling the woman’s body underneath the car, he said. When the auto traveled over the shallow ditch, her body came loose. Her purse, however remained lodged under the auto for several more blocks. Duff said the discovery of the purse let police to establish the probable time of the accident at between 2:30 and 3 p.m. Sunday. Duff said the man who found the purse said he had driven the same route at 2:30 p.m. and did not see the purse but saw it when he returned 30 minutes later. Contributor: Rainbow (47002487)
