Description	:	Mary Leota Chronister, the only child of Zachariah Taylor and Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Rice Chronister, was born 22 Sep 1869, on a farm near Franklin Grove, China Twp, Lee Co, IL. Zachary, her father, had come from Adams Co, PA, with his parents (John and Margaret Smith Chronister) when he was a boy of about 7 years of age. In 1974, her mother married a widower, Cyrus R. Noe, the father of 8 children. They moved to IA, and, had at least one son, Lloyd, who was Leota's half-brother. Leota was orphaned at the age of eight, when her mother unexpectedly died when she had come back to IL to visit relatives. Her mother, Mary, was buried in the Washington Grove Cemetery. Leota eventually went to Cloud Co., KS, and was raised by her mother's sister, Diantha, and Diantha's husband, Joseph W. Crandall. Leota attended Excelsior School, a rural school in Cloud Co. She married James W. "Jim" Burroughs on 10 Aug 1887. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Trego Co where they homesteaded a claim, and their first child, Reginald (1889-1940), was born. They improved the claim, sold it and moved to OH, where Jim was a station agent for the Wabash RR. There, their second child, Lloyd (1894-1985), was born. They then returned to Cloud Co KS where they purchased several farms. Here, four more children were born: Wanda V. (1897-1955), Donald O. (1904-1988), Nola Dale (1908-1943), and Dallas E.(1911-1983). Besides raising her family, Leota and Jim were both charter members of New Hope Wesleyan Methodist church and they worked faithfully in the establishment and maintenance of the church. Jim died in 1918, and Leota was left with the family to provide for. In 1925, they moved from their home in Cloud Co to Ottawa Co., and for a short time also moved to and owned a fruit farm in Fremont Co. CO. She then returned to Ottawa Co. and lived with her sons, Donald and Reggie, until Reggie's death. During the last years of her life, she also lived at times with her son, Lloyd, and her daughter, Wanda. She died 12 May, 1947, at the home of her daughter, Wanda, in Ft. Scott, KS. Leota was buried beside her husband, Jim, in the same lot where two sons were also buried. Her life was not an easy one, but Leota always maintained a cheerful attitude, and her grandchildren remember her as fun-loving, with a great sense of humor.
