Description	:	James Washington "Jim" Burroughs was born 12 Oct 1865 in Huntley Twp, Carlton Co, PA. He was the oldest child of Mary Margaret "Maggie" Kocher (1846-1920) and Thomas Hamilton Burroughs (1837-1920). His siblings were William Homer (1866-1918) and Saloma Viola (1871-1956). He became the editor of the second newspaper in Glasco KS (Aug 1881-Aug 1882) H.and he was also preaching at some area churches before he was 16 years of age. His parents were divorced, and his mother and two siblings had joined him by 1886. Jim was farming, and their address was Cool, KS. He would marry Mary Leota Chronister on 10 Aug 1887, Homer married Allie Swartz in Dec of 1888, and Viola married Charles Swartz in 1889. Shortly after their marriage, Jim and Ota moved to Trego Co., where they homesteaded 320 ac. By 1894, they were living in OH, where Jim worked as an agent for the Wabash Railroad. They were back in Cloud Co., Center Twp., in 1897, where they would purchase two - 160 ac farms, and where Jim would live the rest of his life. Jim and Ota would have six children: Reginald (1889-1940); Lloyd (1894-1985); Wanda (1894-1955) m. Walter Lewis; Donald (1904-1988) m. Wylvia Headley & Dorothy Stanley; Nola Dale (1908-1943) m. August Tubach; and Dallas (1911-1983) m. Eula Headley & Adeline Turner Moden. Religion played a huge part in the lives of the family. Jim had earned his ministerial license and was instrumental in moving New Hope Church close to the home farm. Community affairs were also big in Jim's life - he organized the Good Roads Club, was an officer in a Threshing Machine Co, was also instrumental in establishing the New Hope Telephone Co., which was in the Burroughs home for a while. He wrote newspaper columns. and championed the cause of everything in life that would make the world better. The family socialized with the many family members who had immigrated to Kansas. Music was also very important in the lives of the family as they owned seveeral pianos, a mandolin, coronet and guitar, and their children took music lessons. Jim died 19 Jan 1918, at the age of 52, of chronic inflamation of the kidneys, in the home of his sister, in Concordia. He was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. His brother, Homer, and his wife were buried in the same plot. His Mother was brought back from PA to also be buried there, and later, Ota, and two sons - Reggie and Lloyd - were also buried in the same plot. Viola and other family members were buried just across from them.
