Mary never married. ------------------- Fairfield Ledger September 21, 1977 Mary Louise Nelson - Veteran Nurse Dies Mary Louise "Nellie" Nelson, 66, 300 E. Washington St., died at 8:40 a.m. today at the Jefferson County Hospital, an institution which she had served for 40 years. Chief surgical nurse at the hospital before her retirement, she had been a patient since Sept. 6. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church with Pastors Keith Lingwall and Lenwood Monte officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Raymond Funeral Home Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Miss Nelson was born Feb. 10, 1911 in Galesburg, Ill., the daughter of Grant O. and Mary K. Hess Nelson. She was reared and educated in Fairfield, graduating from Fairfield High School in 1929. She graduated from Moline Public Hospital Nursing School, Moline, Ill., in 1933 and joined the staff of the Jefferson County Hospital March 1, 1934. Mary Louise was named surgical nurse in 1938 and continued to serve in that capacity until October, 1973. In 1974, she was honored at a reception at the hospital marking her 40th anniversary in nursing. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church and a long-time officer of the Philathea Class. She was a past matron of Order of Eastern Star, past worthy priestess of White Shrine; past noble grand of the Rebekahs and a member of Chapter E, TTT. She was a Red Cross nurse, a member of the Registered Nurses Club and the Hospital Auxiliary. Surviving are her mother, Mrs. Grant Nelson, Fairfield; and three brothers, Richard Nelson, Milwaukee, Wis.; James Nelson and Robert Nelson, both of Fairfield. Her father and one sister are deceased.
